Thread: Air Pumps and Turbo's

So I am about ready to order a turbo kit from ZZP, but ran into a question that ZZP was not really sure about. Did a search on here but was unable to pull up anything in regards to these engines equipped with air pumps. I'm a New York state resident and for some reason my car is equipped with an air pump which is hooked up to the rear exhaust manifold. From what I understand this is a typical set up for cars designed to be used in the California market because of the stringent air quality control issues out there. In any case, my car has this set up and I easily modified my SLP Headers for this, but since I am going to be going Turbo, I will be replacing the SLP headers with ZZP front and rear Plogs. ZZP does not believe I can modify their headers to accept the air pump hookup and also believes it is not recommended because of the turbo pressures. Does anybody have any experience with these air pumps? Can it be removed? Does the PCM need programmed to delete this feature? Sort of at a loss right now, this seems to be last hick-up before I order the Z7 kit.

hey there fellow NY'er.... i unplugged the air pump at the rear manifold and the tube is open by the front header, the pump itself is still plugged in. i never set a code and i pass inspection every year, hope this helps

Are you running any type of turbo kit or going naturally aspirated? I'm surprised no one else has run into this issue, I would really like to hear what they did as well? Thanks for posting QwikGT.

Is the best thing to do just to not hook it up, dead end it, and leave it in place, or does the whole air pump system need to be physically removed? If it needs to be removed what is involved to do so? What components? Thanks for the input.

Anyone running a ZZP turbo kit with the air pump still hooked up? There was a concern about the pressure being issue, but I can't see it being that much of an issue in regards to exhaust pressure considering that would come into play after the turbo, am I wrong? Just trying to avoid throwing codes, causing issues get it inspected/smogged, etc... If it is working with the air pump now, why chance unhooking it and causing problems? I'm curious what anyone is doing out in California in regards to the air pump issue?
