Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
@ Slowpoke the more appropriate question is why not. ctually id rather the datsun but the rx7, is extremely light(2400lbs), cheap($4-500), not so old as the are rare, collectible or vintage(1985), rwd, have decent aerodynamcs and handle phenominally. Guys swap in the grand national 3.8s & lsx and run very low times, have a mild mannered car and good gas milage. The marriage of a series II & a datsun or 7 wud be devine to say the least.

I get the 7 part Mr. Cool. Why, was an appropriate question I thought. Why a 3800? More cost effective? Why NOT an LS?
From the link you provided...
"went with the Buick V6 because I feel it has much more potential than a V8. More performance, less cash..proven fact.
I bought the complete drivetrain for about $3000. The car was $200. I spent $400 on converting the 4 lug RX-7 to 5 lug. The fuel system was about $250 including all new -8 lines and intake walbro pump. Battery was $70. Intercooler was $500. Turbo II wheels were $100. Nitto's all the way around were $500.....
Obviously it adds up. There were numerous trips to ACE Hardware. Should have opened a corporate account there http://www.rx7club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif.
My goal for the 4.1 motor is 550HP/650Torque.
Also it's really not uncommon for a stockish 3.8 motor in good tune to make ~400HP. The key is island towing torque. Remember, horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.
People can not swallow the idea of a stockish V6 making 400Hp that gets 25+mpg. This is half the fun........
P.S. If anyone is serious, the complete drivetrain in the MisRed car is for sale. My other motor is about done and I don't need a motor laying around. $2800 - Plenum to oil pan, ECM, turbo, headers, wiring harness the works! Perfect to drop into another RX-7. I also know of a great donor car that is $200. '88 GXL, grey, $200. I was thinking of building another and selling the final product. How much would someone pay for a 10 second car that your mom could drive?"
Lulz @ "more potential" Seriously?
The rest I can get along with I guess. If I was going to do one, it would be like this...

The guy that I quoted from your link has 10.79 @ 126 in his sig, is that a current time for the car? The bay pic that I posted is a local guy, he ran a 9.30 @ 150 on 12 pounds with traction issues. I'm not saying the a buick V6 powered 7 would be a sh*t build, I'm just saying LS>3800. Just my opinion though.
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
Maybe he was thinking more along the lines of money and room than potential.
My bad D.Horizon 2 thread jack
Slowpoke-thanx bro, i am rather cool lol.....I'm looking fowad to thi mini-car debate cause u seem like a guy who knows his shiiiz, & i can appreciate that.
The equation LS>3800 is incomplete, silly even w/o acknowledging the desired goal, (mine is a lightweight, reliable, descrite, affordable, sleeper that can run in the 10s, and is relatively docile on the street to be moderatly daily driven.) My philosophy is enough is cool but too much isnt cool.
lsx's Canidacy:
1. The LSX platforms generally dominates as a result of cubes, but to stave off a turbo Series II or Lc2 in a 2500lb car you gotta throw boost at the truck motors or n2o @ the pass car versions. A 800hp motor would also need adequate trans, rear axle, fuel system & suspension. Bench racin a turbo lsx in a 2500lb car is cool but actually cutting a good 60ft is different.
2. even my lil sis knows that a mazda or datsun aint supposted to sound like a vette, so i doubt ill rope any1 into a race 4 cash (We bet out in philly)
Boosted 6 bolt main 3.8: Accomodating, adequate but not excessive.
The series II & III acomplishes all the above, even some of the goals the lsx cant. For pennies I'll build a series III. l67 or l32 block, fbody intake manifolds, modded fbody exhaust manifolds w/a 4l60e from a fbody. With traction, a decent stall, nissans r200 rear, moderate sized turbo(PT6776 ??), injectors, Walbro 340 gpl Fuel pump, intercooler, Cam, 1.9 rocker, ls6 valve springs & racegas I'm @ my 10s goal(eg Darkhorizons sinfully fast feiro). Remember I technically dont need to run a 9.3 @ 150mph, i jus need to be across the finish line b4 da cat next to me.
Grand National, where boosted 3.8 made a mark.
If you check the dates im sure you will see that when mike/misred built this 3.8 rx7 it was yrs ago, prolly b4 ppl were throwin flipped manis & slappin turbos on lsxs. I have a friend w/ a 99 ws6, another friend w/ a terminator cobra & i have a turbo regal. While the larger displacement lsx does have more max hp potential, it will in no way make more torque than the lc2/grand nat motor w/ the same minimal amount invested($5-600).
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
For $1500 you could have a L67 making 500+whp... Finding any LS long block would run you that much. (yes you can get cheaper iron blocks).
For cars that grudge race on the street.... Wierd unknown setups that make big power and hook up will make alot of money. (I wonder how I know).
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
And to think I had no hand in this. *giggle*
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
darkhorizon-rmember me yet lol??
Dont get me wrong i got love for the lsx but in a small rwd import it in no way allows for a sleeper. Not to mention w/ a turbo lsx set up you also need alot of other parts. Built trans, built rear, crazy fuel system & a very strong suspension. I dont really need all that. In a 23-2500lb car you dont need alot of power to run fast & hard. Now if i were to do a motor swap in my buick it would beturbo lsx all the way!!!
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
Who told you a 3800 was lighter than an LSx?
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
matt5112-i believe u misunderstood my post wrong Acki. I said "my goal is a lightweight, reliable, descrite, affordable, sleeper that can run in the 10s, and is relatively docile on the street to be moderatly daily driven.)"
As in the car(sleeper) is lightweight(2500lbs) and quick. not the weight of the actual motor but the entire build. Although a 3800 IS slightly lighter than some lsx(iron bock). The all alum ls1 weighs around 500lbs+
Weight of LS1 - LS1TECH
So i imagine the lq4, lm7, lq9 ect are heavier, dig?
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
I have never cared about engine weight... 99% of most of the cars out there can add or subtract the weight you would have on a motor somewhere on the chassis with minimal work.

Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
no the series II is about 400lbs, not 550 kid.

Actually...the N/A L36 weighs 392 pounds...which is about a good one hundred pounds LESS than a supercharged L67. The Supercharger and all the accessories add quite a bit of weight.

This argument is a bit hard to have.. you could easily start factoring in quite a few different options that 3800s have to determine weight...
The simple fact is, weight is a moot point.... this situation of a turbo setup with a fbody intake, weight is going to be around what a LSx is going to be with similar turbo setup...
And as I said before... take a crap and hit the gym before you go racing if you are so worried about weight.
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
I could care less about how a engine weight makes an impact on racing...I just posted that for Matt and the other guy talking about the weight of the 3800.
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
& my point was for the price and what i wanna do the series II fites the bill BETTER than the lsx. My friend has a low 10s ls2 T/a w/n20 and it is in no way a sleeper. The thing sounds like a lion on roids
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
Well, our cars sound like jet liners... so you are probably going to miss the boat on noise unless you go with an involved exhaust setup.
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
Eh my turbo buick isnt that loud. Your 3800 might be louder than mine, since your @ 560wh & i only speculate Ill need about 420rwhp.
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
Took this to the track recently... It went 11.4@132 mph on a little shakedown pass.... He didnt listen to me when I told him to run my slicks, and he ended up breaking an axle when he put the pedal down the next pass/
Re: Manual 3800T taking a dump on some 560whp AWD street monsters
Just proves my point that our cars are just 2 ton paper weights :D
Not wider is better, lighter is better
Nicely done!
