Thread: Staggered wheels, GXP style.

Wheel size and fitment or looks isn't really my concern.

Handling is.

What I'm curious about: is a GXP esque setup worth the investment?

Presently I'm wearing my front tires at three times the rate of my rears.

This is with 225/60R16 Goodyear Fuel Max's, H speed rating on stock wheels (6.5J).

It also seems a wider contact patch on the front would be helpful in reducing understeer.

I was thinking of 255/50r17 out front on 8" wheels and 225/55r17 on 7" wheels out back.

Yes I realize wider =/= more traction, just more ability to deal with heat, thus keeping tire in heat range where traction is greatest.

If that is a concern then dont stagger them, I would 4 of the same size so I could rotate, accually plan on get a set of 4 x8s for the GXP so we can run 255/45R18s and rotate

255's are probably too large for the rear.

Doing that would increase understeer.

Tire wear isn't a concern.

Whats concerning is why the tires are wearing.

Guessing here, but heat might be the cause. They're an H rated low rolling resistance tire, that I'm beating the crap out of.

Another thing to note is running wider fronts limits my tire choices greatly.

I'd probably run gforce sports which dont seem to do as well as pzero nero all seasons.

Cost between the tires is negligible to me at $20/tire difference.

Also consider I can pick up new 17x7's for $360 and run better tires on them instead of spending much more on wheels just for wider fronts. They might look better though.

But I'm not quite convinced I care about looks with this car.

Options....

If its a pain for reasons like tread wear, finding tires and so on.

None of those are a concern.

I'll have another set of all season wheels/tires I can throw back on at any time.

Another interesting point is I'd be stuck with gforce sports.

Whereas for another $40 a tire I can get some Pzero Nero all seasons...

I can also buy $80 wheels (17x7, 18 lbs or so, similar mass as an 04+ front rotor) instead of $200 wheels to justify the cost of the more expensive tires.

Leaves me with more traction (better compound), ability to rotate, and costs less money.

Saves me money I can spend elsewhere.

Gotta fix those LCA's and figure out a rear end package.

What is your offest for front and rear when you run the 255's on 18x8's all the way around? Tires don't rub in the rear going that wide?
