Thread: 20's & Trannies

What is the deal? I have read a few places that this is a bad idea. Is it true? I don't want to buy big wheels and then have my transmission go out. Is it something that I should worry about? I usually do not "race" the car or beat on it, just every now and then. Is that "just every now and then" going to sneak up on me and kill my tranny?

So, what is the verdict? Why is it that they kill the transmission? I know they are heavier, BUT do are they harder on it from a dead stop or a roll?

Will they look out of place on a car that isn't lowered? I am not going to lower my car because I already have problems going over speed bumps in walmarts parking lot and rubbing.
OH, and what do you think of these wheels?

I like the wheels, and I have been running 20's for 2 years now and I haven't had a problem at all with my tranny and beat on it often. Also my car isn't lowered and I like the 20 look but I know a lot of members will say different.

Well i spent 1100 on mine brand new. I think thats a decent price as long as there isn't any curb rash and all that good stuff.

When i was looking for a gtp 4 out of the 8 cars i called on were runing 20"s and all were on their second trans SO im going to say that over time 20's will put more tress on the trans then if you had a lighter wheel

That being said A lot of it is how you drive and how well you take care of your car

i got 20s 22s and 24s on my cars and havent had any problems and i beat the hell outa my gtp

Hi Keith,

Large wheels like yours have more rotating mass than the factory 16" wheels so it will put more stress on the transmission and axles but if you drive sensably then you will be ok with it. If your transmission is stock then adding a shift kit will help prolong its life.

30000 miles with 20s on no problems with tranny

Theres no doubt 20s put more stress on the tranny, brakes, suspension.

Im not knocking 20s. I dont mind them, but dont say his tranny will be fine. People have blown trannys on stock rims with a stock car. These 4T65Es are made of glass. lol

So all im saying is, dont be shocked when it starts slipping or shiftin hard or doesnt lock up right. These trannys suck..lol
