which would be a better size for winter tires and would they fit on my 06 grand prix gt with the stock 17's?
225/45r17
or
235/55/17
they are both hankook icebear tires

Whats your factory size? And the smaller the tread patch (yet still properly fit your rim) the better, less rolling resistance through the snow (basically less plowing)
stock tire size is 225/55/17
the 235 is wider, but the 225/45 is MUCH smaller overall, which also loses ALOT of load carrying capacity, so i that case i say the 235 to stay safe. I will never go down more then 1 size from factory which would be a 225/50-17 or a 235/45-17 (that may be a little wide for your rim though)
I bought a second set of rims for my 2006 GT, 16" and got a set of Good Year Nordic 215/65 R16 tires and they fit really nice
I read hankook winter tires are ****, well atleast in nothern ontario they are
I see em alot around here and they perform pretty well. Bridgestone Blizzak's seem to be about the best, goodyears are kinda overpriced, and the GT Radial Champiro Snow's work VERY well for a budget tire (better then the Hankook IMO)
I was going to suggest 225.60.17 or whatever 60 series corresponds diameter-wise.
The 16s would be better. More tires available, cost less, narrower tire.
I found that Dunlop SP60s are as good on ice and snow as the Bridgestone REVO1 (now discontinued) I had earlier. And the REVOs were excellent.
The Dunlops will go through anything.
