How can they even compare the G6 to the GP. the whole reason we got the GP was the G6's lack of size and interior room.

The G6 was the replacement for the Grand Am, the G8 is the replacement for the Grand Prix though significantly upgraded and I would suspect given the current situation that the G8 might also serve as the replacement for the GTO.

I heard the same that Syn heard. The g6 Grand AM and G8 Grand Prix...I also heard and this I dont really believe! but I heard that if GM sales enough Camaros they are going to start on the new Trans am...Someone said they seen the concept of it..I dunno! I doubt they do! IMO the G8 kinda takes up for the Grand Prix,GTO...and hate to say it but the Trans Am

We're sorry, the Pontiac Grandprix is no longer available

They should have kept the name alive on the G8.

Maybe it will work out like it did for Ford and the Five Hundred. When sales of the Five Hundred slumped, they changed the name to Taurus. Exact same car, but with a tried and true recognizable name.

Ummm....where the hell has everyone been? They announced the end of the Grand Prix around 2 YEARS ago. The only reason any Grand Prix' were made in '08 was for fleet sales, thus the lack of a GTP this year.

The G6 is the Grand Am replacement, thus why the Grand Am disappeared around the same time the G6 popped up. G6 = 6th gen Grand Am. G8 = 8th gen Grand Prix.

As to why they changed the names, as much as it angers hardcore Pontiac enthusiasts, it DOES make sense from a business perspective. The general mass public perception of the Grand Am, Grand Prix, Sunfire, etc. is that they're piles of sh*t. Everything breaks on them, and they aren't meant to last. So rather than trying to convince people that these are GOOD cars now, they just scraped the nameplates altogether, and tried to start from scratch. I don't like it, but I can understand why they did it. Name recognition in this instance is a BAD thing, as most people that recognize these names want to stay AWAY from them, not coming running back to them.

As to the Firebird/Trans Am coming back, I don't see it happening. Remember, Pontiac is very close to being axed altogether, so I doubt they're planning on bringing back another gas guzzling V8 muscle car under that division during an era that has very little demand for one. It probably wouldn't go over too well with the whole bailout situation, either. If anything, the G8 coupe would make more sense (again, based off the Holden coupe), because at least that's a 2-door version of a preexisting car.
PREVIOUS: '89 Pontiac 6000 STE AWD (2/1376), '90 Pontiac GP SE McLaren Turbo (1/2749)
'90 Pontiac Grand Prix STE McLaren Turbo (1/1000), '01 Pontiac GP GTP Special Edition (1/1341)
CURRENT: '00 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (ugh...boring regular one)

Hence the reason I bought an 08, the last year of them. The G8 (according to the dealer in town) is pretty much a 4 door GTO. As the GTO was never released in Canada this is there way of getting it out on the market. I looked over a demo at the dealership last month and it looks pretty cool, it comes with most of the exterior accessories we are spending money on, but on the downside, the interior is not as big as the Grand Prix.

Looks like a Grand Prix squished from the sides... with larger wheels, rotors... and at the same time, reminds me of a muscle version of a CTS... maybe CTS-V... 0.o dont like the look, but the performance aint nuthin to gawk at..... *wonders bout engine swapping*... hmm...
