Not surprised.. It still pisses me off to no end though.
Yeah it sucks pontiac was killed off, I would always rather have a Trans Am over a Camaro, and the G8 was such an awesome car that could had been greater if the Pontiac brand continued but **** happens and well im still stuck with my 97 GTP which I love, so I keep appreciating the Pontiac brand even though its dead.
< Not surprised.
Oh wellz I still continue keeping mine and eventually adding a GTO or G8 to the collection.
Agree 100% in the fact that GM killed pontiac by making every thing a rebadge of something else. Sunfire rebadge trans am firebird rebadge g5 rebadge grand prix...... yes rebadge bonneville yup that one too.. chevy sells trucks and suvs along with gmc and with buick being strong in china it wasn't going to be killed ohhh and how about the g8 and gto yep them are rebadged bastard children from Australia.
I don't regret GM killing pontiac can anyone seriously think they were better with the brand than now? Too many versions in the same market is foolish and ill stand by that and say tahoe suburban yukon denali and escalade all in the same market is foolish also!
I don't like the way they labeled this article. Let's all remember that if gm wouldve focused harder on making better cars since the 80's they wouldn't be In a position to have to take bailout. But instead corporate mismanagement and building substandard quality cars over the years led them to this point.
Well they also had a big problem with pricing. The GTO is a prime example of that, too expensive, poor sales. They axed the colorado and the canyon, because they didnt price them correctly, i mean with not too many options ordered you'd be better off buying a silverado. In the 90s a Beretta z26 was about the same cost as z28 camaro. And the list goes on. Its been going of for years. What got me scratching my head the most was that they dumped Pontiac and kept GMC. GMC is most useless brand in the GM line because Chevy makes a version of pretty much every GMC truck. And the ones that aaren't can always be brought back as chevys. Thats just me though.
GMC is useless?
Apparently you've never heard of anything larger than a Sierra?
Because they sell heavy duty trucks out the ass.
Same with people who cry WHY DIDNT GM KILL OFF BUICK OMGGGG OLD PEOPLEEEE...
Because Buick's sales in China probably beat all of GM's sales in the US.
It was a smart choice from a business stand point. They were doing this to profit, not to please you cry babies. This topic needed to die years ago when it happened.
So many American auto manufactures have been axed in the last several years. While it is sad, I do agree with the gov't pov. GM has/had too many brands. Maybe with fewer brands to worry about GM will focus on quality.
I also think the GMC brand should've been axed with Pontiac. Even though GM says it makes money, It's still a redundant brand.
Chevy makes versions of the heavy vehicles to. And like I said, anything that Chevy didnt make a version of can be brought back as a chevy. as far as Buick , everyone knows getting rid of buick would have been a bad idea.
BTW the name of the heavy duty Chevy versions are called the c series. I live on long island and LIPA and national grid have them, there C4500's. I work for D.O.T here in new York so I see them all the time.
Maybe if the government had stayed out of it GM would have gone the direction they needed to go. They only cost us 9.7 Billion.
Guy above me is obvlious do you have any idea how many new and drastically improved vehicles GM has put out since the bail out ???????? Gee take a look at the new impala that my friend didnt happen with sticks of bubble gum and duct tape!! And the ATS or XTS just to name a few that didn't even exist a few years ago. Millions of dollars went to research and design for them to you know ummm maybe put out a solid product to be competitive with!!!
Yes its cost us all money but like the other guy said bailout was far more necessary than the piss poor attempt to bail out and restructure the banks!! Why don't you research all the money lost with the "too big to fail" bank bailouts before you b1tch what the auto industry cost and at least GM wasn't taken over by Fiat!!
Obviously you guys are blind to everything that happened except that GM made it through. Take a look at it and look at who got screwed, who got paid off. They could have restructured. they could have gotten a loan from the government. And don't tell me they got a loan. A loan is something you pay back with interest and the loaner doesn't lose his azs.
When I first read this article one thing came to mind... Feds want run in the mill econo boxes, hence the MPG standards, Pontiac advertisement was so "performance" orientated and more Pontiac V8's were in the making. Basically if Pontiac only made hybrids and 4 bangers it would of been saved even if it was costing GM money to produce them.
Honestly though, GM should of never had anything to do with hummer, Isuzu and saab in the states. Saturn was good in the 90's cuz it was cheap but making the same s*** for so long with little change will get you. I agree with what was said before though, pricing of the GM vehicles are so screwy. GMC has established itself as a classier alternative to Chevrolet trucks. GMC should have been axed as well with Pontiac, park a Sierra SLT and a Silverado LTZ next to each other. Minimal differences. same story with the rest of the GMC line. I heard a story from back in the day that GMC used better metal than Chevys justifying the price increase, doubt that still is the story
