well all we have for the most part in the area is 91 octane so that's what it was "street tuned" for, and yeah i told him about all the mods, he told me he had a few gtps before and knew a bit about them so i went out of my way to prove to him the supporting mods for the pulley, i like to think i did my best to put a healthy good running motor in the car, but a good tune behind it (overkill then street tuned) and lastly give him good instructions on how to take care of the car (aka fuel type to use and so on)

Truth is i was 99.9% sure i was being lied too, but didn't want to look stupid and be wrong after calling him out, at this point other then putting a stock pulley on it, i don't think i could have made it run any safer but when it comes down to it in the worst situations (like the motor was put in) it will still have an issue, i think its fair to say if any of us would have sold our car and the next guy did this there would have been the same outcome, what sucks is how low miles that motor was, it was literally on in a million considering it was never even rebuilt!

thanks for the reassurance guys, my heart sank when i heard about it, im not the type of guy to drop an issue on someone else and not care, im glad to see it was nothing i did nor anything that was pre-existing, when it comes down to it, it was the driver showing off or just running it down the highway at WOT, with the wrong fuel and way too cold of a night

sorry for the long post i wanted to sum everything up!

Edit: on the top part of this post i should specify, for the most part 91 octane is the highest we have, all the stations around here at least have 87 and 89

I have never seen a gas station that only had 87 octane and I grew up in a turd-hole town in BFE. Pretty sure the dude is lying from the get-go. Sleep easy friend, you are not at fault.

Hold onto the confessions, email them to yourself and keep them. Guy bought the car, its his problem not yours. If he tries to take any legal recourse whip out the confessional texts. I'd assume you verbally told him the car was modded and tuned and that it required 93 octane, I usually include that info and the requirements in a bill of sale that they will sign.

sadly i got stations all over that sell 87 only, and cash only.

if they had no 93 he should have kept driving. or parked it.

He beat it with 87 in it and it blew up.

One of the benefits of owning a tuner is being able to back the timing off the car before you sell it, for instances like this, even on mostly stock cars sometimes.

A similar thing happened to me. I sold my 99 GTP to this girl. I told her it had all new hubs, tie rods, LCA's etc etc. Just needed aligned. I even threw a set of basically new Fuzion tires in with the car as well. She took it to Sears to get aligned and they told her it needed new tie rods and all new hubs. And apparently a headlight burned out after she bought it. So apparently I "sold her a lemon car" when I said right to her damn face that it had new hubs and tie rods. And the bulb...really? They don't last for ****ing ever.

So OP..i wouldn't give 2 ****s about it. He said he put 87 in it...he blew it up.

update: i met up with the guy today to give him a spare rear bumper i had told him i would give him with the car sale.
So we get there and transfer the bumper from my truck to his (other) car and i asked if there was any more news on the motor, and he said yeah i was gonna talk to you about that and went on to say how it was gonna cost 2300 bucks for him to rebuild the motor and $700 to R&R it and said he was wanting to be a nice guy about it and didn't want anyone else to get into the situation but that he wanted me to help cover the costs! so i went at him (being nice) and told him how it was that it was NOT a pre-existing issue but that the 87 octane fuel, with such low temps is what did it in, then i flat out called him out and said look i don't believe for one second that you where going 60 mph with this happened, and that detonation is caused by boost, he then told me (look at my first post its a slight change of story) that he was at a stop and (pointed to a street about a block away) and said i made it about that far before boom! I then went back to what i told him before about what causes chipped pistons and it was like it went in one ear and out the other, then he said that he knows there's an Iowa lemon law and/or he could take me to court but he wasn't like that, i then told him what i was 99.9% sure about was that the Iowa lemon law covers new cars with recurring factory defects and he said no it covers used cars too, all in all he was real nice about it but him implying that it was something i did or something wrong with the motor as well as he refused to take responsibility for his actions was quite offending, i gotta jump off the computer but anyone could find a few threads covering how a chipped piston occurs and post them up here i would be greatful

Edit: yes i made sure before selling him the car that he knew it needed 91 octane fuel and when he called i asked him about it and he said the station he was at didn't have any so he had to get 87 octane

i know here in mass the lemon law covers any car that is private seller or used dealership car. if you pay over 700 for a car then your covered for a certain amount of time. Not being a ass but your probably stuck with this car. Hes the buying which means hes right until you can prove him wrong. And unless you have proof that he put in 87 octane and proof that he beat on the car then its not going to hold up in court. and saying "well he told me he put 87 in the car on a cold night and then was only going 60 and boom," unfortunately that isnt going to work. I skimmed the thread im at work, but do you have in writing that he put 87 in it??

Think about this. He said he's trying to be a "nice guy" right? To me he seems guilty. Seems to me he willingly beat on it with improper fuel and is trying to pawn it off. He knows he ****ed it up but doesn't want to own up to it.

I would flat out say I have txts of you saying you put in the wrong octane, and when you put the wrong octane in a MODDED BOOSTED motor, that was also tuned for 91 octane it = disaster, so take me to court.
lower octane in a stock GTP is dumb enough but to do it to a modded one..
edit: do you have txts of him saying this I thought you did.

took a quick look, by iowa law it looks like im fine, nothing to worry about, am i upset that it happened yes, i wish i didn't happen but in the end of the day it was his decisions that caused this so "its not my problem" only seems like the right words
