Be aware that many gas stations have vapor recovery systems (required in some jurisdictions). If you pump too much gas in, the extra gas could get sucked up by the vapor line, and it will be put back in the gas station's holding tank, even tho you already paid for the gas.... That's one of the reasons you should never top off.

I dont think they do around here. However, sometimes the handles are so sensitive and shut off automatically so easily that I'll hold the nozzle out of the fill port (that little disc that the nozzle pushes open) and just lightly press the handle so the gas just barely flows out. I'll continue to fill up that way until just about the point no more gas will go in.

The only draw back to this I have ever found is that I guess the EVAP system or something doesnt like it to be WAY filled up because if you do, at least in my car, it will buck and shudder and even stall sometimes until it consumes some of that gas. So over time Ive gotten pretty good about staying under that point.

Ever have the opposite? I had a pump that seems to take an hour to push out a gallon.

I have on a few occasions. I usually just let go of the handle and let it sit for a few seconds and then start again. Usually it starts running like it should. I dont know what it is but that usually works.
