I have a rule with buying used cars...if it's off road/4x4, or is not naturally aspirated, I'm not buying it used because you have NO idea what abuse that thing has seen. Too often you see the GTP models that have been absolutely pounded into the ground and treated like crap, and once you have one issue with a supercharged motor, there are more than likely many problems to follow. I bought my 2001 GP GT this past winter because of my dad's experience with the exact same car (same color and everything...lol), and the reputation of the 3800 series II motor. Keep oil in it, and it will run forever. Throw a SC on there, and the game changes a bit, especially if it's used and abused.

I think you are loopy. I'd buy a car based on how it looks, runs, etc etc. Picked up my Regal with 161K of abuse on the clock. Drove that motor another 45K miles before my beating on it killed it. 45K miles from a $1400 car is pretty decent in my book.

So... This is a thread about how new hondas have less work to be done to them than decade old pontiacs? See I didn't notice anywhere that claimed the hondas that are so reliable from the OPs past were old... Let's see what ol' uncle Dave can do here... Ok... Hondas are so reliable, hell the only thing i've ever had to do to mine is replace the transmission... That's what everyone that has ever run one has said to me... Now it seems like having an entire transmission chunk to bits under a car is kind of a bad thing for the claim it runs on flawless magic... Eh... But a fan is a fan...

How about this... I know my gtp is faster, more comfortable, and less embarrassing than my boys civic... I also know his car gets better mileage, and... uhh... better mileage... I know i've put 471k on an old 3800 engined lesabre... I also know right now the interior of my gtp is filled with loose switches and the dash doesn't light up... Fuse probably... But I am powerful lazy... You know that old buick wasn't in perfect nick either... Hell the gtp has 200k on the clock... It's never handled the a/c controls with dignity, the seat heaters are weird, and the tilt for the heads up sinks in its little spot making adjusting the thing tricky... But it does run and drive like it was meant for... The way it did in years of yore...

Where was I going with this? Oh yeah! If you were to wake up tomorrow and it was the year 2000... Would you run out and buy a honda? Would you suffer driving that joyless pile for a decade just so you could say it's so reliable... See the flaw in the idea that a honda will always be a honda is that driving a honda sucks... You look back now with longing over your wasted youth, wishing you had manned up and learned to work on a car at just a basic level so you too could have something to drive that wasn't sad... But you're a wuss... You've never done anything for yourself in your life, and the idea that a car will coddle you down the road in a fluffy blanket of denial is just what gets you going... Hondas are for the joyless and unexciting... The only thing they offer a buyer is this alleged reliability... And if that's the only thing you want out of a car well boy howdy do I have just the car for you... Just hit honda, and tell the sales chimp "I have no passion and i'm afraid of change." People like that are page 3 in their hiring pamphlet...

Okay - point taken...a $1400 beater that you're not necessarily buying to last for years and years is a bit different. When I am shopping for my cars, I'm looking for something that's going to last long enough for my wife to get a new kid-hauler and pay it off before I need to replace my car.

Well..my plan is to have this car 3-5 years. My current cost all in with a ton of mods that the car didn't "need" and didn't add anything except for my personal enjoyment is almost $5K. I've had the car 30 months and planned originally that I would have it 3-5 years.

Currently monthly amount if the car disappeared today has been $166/month. Each day brings that number down. At this point the transmission has 24K and the motor has 50K, body is in good shape, everything else is gravy.

This was owned by a teen who thought the heat problem was the gauge and put in a fancier one. That being said, it does have 206000 miles, burns no oil and still moves like a raped ape

That's really impressive. I felt very lucky to find mine after my car got totalled while I was stopped at a light, and the girl behind me was too busy texting to notice the line of cars stopped in front of her. Hit me doing 45-ish, and totalled my car. Needed something quick as soon as I got my insurance checks, and found my GP. I was amazed to find a 2001 that had under 80,000 on it. One owner, dealer maintained. I'm a happy boy...lol

Change the LIM and SC gaskets, put in new oil and coolant. Took it for a test drive. spun a bearing. RIP

Im going to go out on a LIM and say you didnt flush the motor properly before you took it out and floored the car up to about 100 mph. As for you 93 honda, i have a 1990 cutlass supreme international. All digital dash, no electrical issues ever. The car has had two alternators, two starters, and some brake pads in 22 years. If you want a car to last you need to stay up on the maintenance, and when you buy a used car and you want it to last, you have to fix all the problems the other guy neglected. humm... my car has 220k on it, and ALL ORIGINAL...

i have changed some light bulbs. and I did put in a new blower motor for the heat and AC recently. BUT, my car is GREAT car. and did I mention its faster and more fun to drive than your 93 accord?

guess what I am doing today. new axles and wheel bearings. yup. finally after 220k. and they dont really need it. But, I am a bit meticulous.

bought my car at 140 000km 4 years ago, only swapped the tranny cause the occasional hard shifting issue($500 for a used tranny with 1 year warranty), otherwise i have done nothing to it besides tires, been 4 years and 50 000km. no regrets.

If you think the GM 3800 motor is a bad motor, you don't work on other types of cars. Japanese reliability is apples to oranges, they view car manufacturing differently than we do here. The 3800 in your Grand Prix is one of the best and most reliable motors America has ever put in a modern car.

This is what made me get a faster car more fun car instead of an accord or civic.
Like what the hell. When someone gets in my car do i want to bore them to death, or make them smile? Do i wanna tell stories about fun times in my 4 cylinder accord, or my supercharged grand prix?
Do i wanna roll up some where looking like im a broke loser, or look like i have good taste and have fun?

So many good points on this thread. You've convinced me. **** Honda! I'm keeping my poncho. A rebuild or swap over the winter and ill start fresh with a kick ass car with a new power plant in the spring. I didn't really want to drive the silver bullet through a Minnesota winter anyway. Already have a 75 dollar winter beater lined up. One thing I know...I will be so meticulous with the maintainence of my pumpkin it won't even be funny.
