If you watch the news or pay attention to whats going on you will notice now that Christmas is fast approaching us there seems more and more people are upset that people like myself use the word Christmas. I understand that there are some that don't believe in God, Jesus or what the Bible teaches us, but come on! Just the other day on a local news station was a commercial for the Nutcracker. It refered the Christmas Tree as the "Holiday Tree." I understand it is considered the Holiday Season with Thanksgiving lumped together with Christmas, but it is Christmas. I am able to understand that people believe in different religions and am ok with this. It is a decision that a person makes. You get suspended or expelled from school for using the words Jesus or God or even pray, but when a person uses the lords name in vain it is ok to get away with. I am not perfect by a long shot from some of my posts on here, but come on! It's Christmas! Merry Christmas!!!!!

    Rant........

I'm good with someone saying "Happy insert their particular holiday of choice" to me. I think it's good to celebrate whatever your beliefs are.

Be it Christmas, Columbus Day, Gay Pride...what ever. If you wanna wish me a happy holiday.. go for it. Just know..when you get to "Save the monkeys Day" I'm going to laugh a bit.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

To what extent has "accepting everybody" turned into washing out definitions and meanings as well as diversity?

Marriage use to mean man + woman + promise to God. But in order to "accept" everybody the word marriage is no longer allowed to be exclusive to a definition.

Christmas is no longer exclusive in an attempt to "accept" everybody as well.

To what extent does "accepting" ostracize others? Why can't we just make up new words instead of redefining old words? Nobody gets upset that a specific arrangement of candles is called a menorah...why can't it be referred to as Holiday *insert term here*?

    World English Dictionary
    Christmas (ˈkrɪsməs)

    — n
    1. a. the annual commemoration by Christians of the birth of Jesus Christ on Dec 25
    b. Also called: Christmas Day Dec 25, observed as a day of secular celebrations when gifts and greetings are exchanged
    c. ( as modifier ): Christmas celebrations
    2. Lady Day Midsummer's Day Compare Michaelmas Also called: Christmas Day (in England, Wales and Ireland) Dec 25, one of the four quarter days
    3. Also called: Christmastide the season of Christmas extending from Dec 24 (Christmas Eve) to Jan 6 (the festival of the Epiphany or Twelfth Night)

    Etymonline
    Word Origin & History

    Christmas
late O.E. Cristes mæsse, from Christ (but retaining the original vowel sound) + mass. Written as one word from mid-14c. Father Christmas first attested in a carol attributed to Richard Smart, Rector of Plymtree (Devon) from 1435-77. Christmas

If I didn't believe in God but the culture I was part of had been celebrating this day for so long, I wouldn't be offended that it was referenced as Christmas vs. Holiday.

I agree w/the OP...it is stupid for people to be going insane over a little saying...idgaf what your religion is or what you celebrate...if i want to walk around with a santa hat on and yell out Merry Christmas, How does that have any type of impact on your beliefs? I cant even say Merry Christmas at work b/c people are gonna get but hurt and start crying to managers that they are offended...well you just gonna have to be offended because im wishing EVERYBODY a Merry Christmas when we leave for the holidays.

Furthermore im just gonna stretch this matter a little further to schools...my nephew came home pissed off because his class had to cancel their christmas party cuz some jewish bi*ch (no offense to anyone who is Jewish...im just ranting) complained to the school that she didnt want her kid participating...well bi*ch make lil timmy stay the f*ck at home the day of the party...how you gon get a whole party cancelled b/c you dont celebrate Christmas. And the real messed up part is when my nephews party was cancelled, there was a note sent out the next day stating that all Christmas Parties were cancelled...its complete and total BS...but hey what can you do?

    I agree w/the OP 110%.

What confuses me most is the Christmas tree. As far as I know people who celebrate Christmas lug a tree into their living room decorate it and put gifts under itso family and friends can celebrate CHRISTMAS around it. Doesnt that make it a solely christmas tree?

Ironic that you call it stupid considering your blatant admission to a lack of knowledge on the subject. X comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter in their word that translates to Christ. The Latin word mas.....well, I'm sure you can figure that one out. Therefore, it is an abbreviation of Christ-mas, and it has been in use for at LEAST a couple hundred years now.

No, ma'am. It just means that Christians took the Yule out of Yuletide.

It is amazing how sensitive believers can be about their faith, yet at the same time, know so little about the history of the faith they profess to hold so dear. Let me tell you all a little story about the origins of this precious holiday you all seem to think is being "stolen" from you.

See, once upon a time (1st Century AD), it was actually considered a sin to celebrate Christ's birth (or any god, for that matter). In fact, no date of birth was even discussed in any of the gospels. Only vague references to shepherds tending to their flocks, which makes it impossible for Christ to have been born in the winter, much less December. In any event, the date was considered unimportant because Christians at that time believed it was his death for our sins and resurrection that were supposed to be remembered and celebrated, not his birth.

Around the 2nd Century, amidst outrage from many churches, some cultures/nations started to celebrate Christ's birth on January 6th, a date most Orthodox Eastern European churches have stuck to even today. It wasn't till around 350 AD that Pope Julius I decided to officially move the date to December 25th. Why the move? Simple. To try and get more pagans to convert. You see, the pagans still far outnumbered the Christians at this point, so it was believed moving the date to coincide with their many feasts, rituals and celebrations would make converting easier. And so, they decided to celebrate the birth of Christ on the same day as the ancient Babylonians celebrated the feast of the Son of Isis, the Romans celebrated Saturnalia (honoring Saturn, the God of Agriculture), the northern European pagans celebrated the birth of Mithras (sun god, for which yule logs were symbolically burned), etc. These were all forms of what is known as Winter Solstice.

From this move, not only did we get the current date of Christmas, but also EVERY SINGLE TRADITION that Christians today believe to be part of Christmas. From the concept of bringing a tree into the home, to decorating it, to putting up lights, to exchanging gifts, to kissing under mistletoe, to hollyberries, to caroling......every single one of them started as a pagan tradition as a part of one or more of the above mentioned Winter Solstice celebrations.

In other words, Christmas as we know it today was nothing more than a marketing strategy by the church to try to lure in more customers. Kind of ironic since Christians today are in an uproar about how Christmas is being stolen from THEM, and is becoming a commercial holiday, isn't it? Especially considering that engaging in pagan rituals is considered a huge sin, and the church was warning/completely against it prior to the Bible being canonized.

It's all part of the "give every kid a trophy/medal" culture. Which splains a lot. I'd really like to kick that mother that suggested giving the losers trophies...a serious kick in the dick.

    "You don't win no silver

David Glen Eisley had it correct.
