So I buy the car about a week ago and go to register it a few days after. We wait in line and walk up to the lady only to find out we needed a lien release form or else we cant register the car. To top things off, I lost the previous owner's number because I thought "I didnt need it anymore". What a stupid mistake that was -_-

I am searching all over the house for his phone number, I looked through the internet trying to search his name and find his number, but no luck. I head out to my newly purchased car and hoped that it would be in there, but nope, no luck again.

As I am heading back inside the house, I look at my trash bin outside and think "why not?" I take a peek inside the bin and find that green paper I wrote his number on. I reach in, grab it, and run inside to call that guy asking him for the lien release form. I forgot to mention, I ended up selling my other car a few days after I bought the GTP too, so I had no ride whatsoever -_-

HOPEFULLY though, I should be getting it faxed over from him, and then I'll be able to register it and drive it once and for all. Problem is, we has a huge snowstorm yesterday, and it was about 50 degrees last week :'( Still though I am hoping I'll be able to drive it on Wednesday.

Oh and a question for Michiganders: Will they let me register the car with a copy of the lien form? I SWEAR IF THEY DONT I'LL %#$^$- Uhh I'll be really, really, pissed off. I am pretty sure it'll be alright with a copy of the lien release form right? Since I am pretty sure the previous owner needs to keep the hard copy for his own purposes.

All you need to register a car here is the title and a bill of sale.

most of the time a bank will put a stamp on a title if a loans has been taken out against it, it will most likely need a sig from the lien holder that its satisfied, + a letter of satisfaction of payment.

every car ive had a loan on, after it was paid off, the title came with all this crap.

Or if he owed money to someone and they went to court and the last owner did not show up, they can put a lien on the cars registration for the amount owed, and dmv collects the money for you, aka a lien.

wish you the best luck, sometime other peoples sh!t follows you around, and that sucks.

Well, the title is stamped by the bank, yet it's not signed which is pissing me off.
The guy lives out about 40 mins away from where I am, and since a huge snow storm hit Michigan, there's no way in Hell I am driving all the way there to get it. It's not even him that I am technically waiting on, it's the damn bank. They were closed yesterday for President's Day and I get a call from him like an hour ago telling me that they'll send it by no later than noon tomorrow. I have college tomorrow so either way I am screwed. It's such a pain in the ass having to find a ride or having a car that's ready to effin go, yet there's no damn registration due to my stupid ass's first time dealing with crap like this.

unless you've never bought a new car or got one from the original owner, you will never have to deal with crap like this, every time a car is bought that had a loan you can expect to deal with this crap. every car i sold after it was paid off, i made sure i gave the new owner all the info the bank sent with the title.

if you see a stamp on the title, make sure its signed and there is a letter of satisfaction of the loan, you could get screwed like the op did.
