very sad... but if he payed the 75.00 this would not be a news story... if someone doesn't have life insurance and they die, do they give the person's spouse money because they feel bad? no they pay for the insurance. Not to sound like a dick. But this could have been simply avoided. Very sad either way.

plus if they helped the guy with the fire and even paid afterwards the fire department would be seeing problems. The other people in the community would probably not pay the fee until there house sets a blaze.. the fire department is counting on that money

I understand they have a policy in place to afford emergency fire services to areas outside the county. However, there should have been procedures in place, in case this situation occurs. Something to the effect of, well now your fee is no longer optional, and it's doubled. Something to that effect, driving the fire trucks out there, and just standing around and watching the fire to make sure it doesn't leave the original property is just wrong. ****ing do your ******* job. This is awefull, and anybody who says he got what he deserves is full of ****. I'll agree, he deserves to pay a higher fee now, and it should no longer be an option for him, but a requirement. Watching his house, and everything he worked all his life for burn to the ground for 75 bucks???? If that isn't bull****, then I don't know what is./

I'm on the fence about this one: on one hand, I can see the point of "they should've sprayed the house, and charged a substantial fee." On the other hand, if you don't pay for your car insurance, for example, should you really expect them to cover you when you total your car and/or total someone else's?

They should have just fought the fire and sent them a bill for $150.

if they fought the fire they would have gone against orders
And I can almost promise that a ton of people wouldnt pay the fee on the next years dues

Policy is set in place If you dont wanna pay dont BUT you wont get your protection or help

I understand why its upsetting But the moron who owned the house knew what the score was

The fire fee policy was in effect for 20 years and the owner 'forgot' to pay the fee. I don't see what the big deal is. Many cities will not send their fire trucks to homes that are not in the city. This is truly a luxury option for those home owners and in this case the owner did not see value until he need that option. Not sure what oath firefighters take in regards to saving structures on fire, but they followed the policy correctly in this case. The fire was started by his grandson, so the owner basically set his own house on fire due to negligence. This should never have happened in the first place. Darwin award winner?

Up here in the great white north, we are debating about people who get lost on mountains skiing. Do we rescue them at a huge cost, or let them die? How about billing them when they are rescued? I don't know how you can stand there and let a house burn down without doing what you are trained to do. Sounds horribly sad. bill them big time after, but don't let them lose everything.

The bottom line is is that there is a fee for the county residents to get the protection of the fire dept. He didn't pay so they don't have to save his house. All they were there to do is to keep it from spreading away from the house. The town is unincorporated also I believe so there is no sort of state or federal funding for the dept, they only serve those who are helping pay for their existence.

I don't feel sorry for the guy, people only want to pay when they need a service. Lesson learned.
