we have a tradition of getting wings every tuesday night, most of the time its 70-100 bucks that we pick up, now that would be a helluva tip if delivered.
Does anyone know what to tip at bars? I usually do 2 drinks then tip a dollar. lately seems all the bars are pretty busy that i've been to and i don't tip at all becuase they are so slow, its bad when you have to send your buddies girlfriend to stand at the bar waiting for some service most of the night... lol
I know a chick who drive's for hungry howies here in my town and she's a knock out and makes good coin doing it
You are tipping a dollar per two drinks? No wonder you get crappy service, especially if that's directly to the bartender. That's like an insult. You tip at least 10-20% at bars, more if you are using a waitress because she has to split her tips with the bartender. Some of them even have to tip out security. I'd be looking for Visine in your drinks or black mascara around the rim of your beer. Don't think it's not been done before.
Most of the time I know the staff at the places I go, so I'm treated well anyway. If I'm at a new place, I tip either the bartender or my waitress $20 right off the bat on the first drink, and let them know that the only two things I ask are for full shots and prompt service the entire night, and then I tip the 10-20% per drink. It's no different than handing a host at a nice restaurant a twenty or fifty for a good table. And it pretty much guarantees double shots and extra friendly service the next billion times I'm there. And it almost always guarantees your bartender will remember exactly what you drink, no matter how odd it is.
The other thing is too most bartenders are allowed to comp an X amount of drinks throughout the course of the night. So you know for your $20 right off the bat, you might end up drinking for free or greatly reduced the whole night, but just remember to give to the bartender at least part of what you would have spent on the drink plus your regular tip if they do this.
You figure if a shot of patron is $6.50 and you dish out $8, you're tipping a little better than 23%, your waitress or bartender will be faster to serve you than someone who say coughs up 50 cents (less than 8%) for that same shot. Or in the event your drinks get comped, which that's my favorite, you just end up giving seven or eight bucks directly to your bartender the whole night. Bar staff remembers two kinds of patrons the best: good tippers and crappy tippers.
If you are at a place that you don't feel the staff deserves a decent tip on the first drink, then go someplace else. Or home.

I never knew what the going rate was, so I just did the same as everyone else. I usually walk into bars with $40 and walk out when it's gone. I can't afford to be spending more than $40 every other night of the week. Friday's I go after work and later on, so I spend more. I figure $4 for two beers = $1 in tips, thats 25%.
When I go to this bar my buddy works at, he usually gives out a few free drinks, I think I spend more money there, than any other bar, because of that...
It is pretty nice to leave hefty tips, one night a buddy dropped $500 in one sitting and we all drank them out of jaeger, next night we went back and got shots lined up for free as we were walking in and people were like "are these the guys from last night?" but I don't see me dropping $500 anytime soon... lol
I used to hate tipping. I hated having to subsidize the restaurant owners because they paid their waters so poorly. But that was also when I had no money. Now that I am more set financially, I try to tip good unless the service sucks. However, I hate when they act like they deserve it, though. That's a good way to get substandard tips from me.
I tip well where I feel it is justified. Waiters/waitresses-they work for less than min wage and depend on tips for their salary. BUT the service needs to be good. Even if the food is crappy but the server was polite and kept my drink filled, then they get a good tip. A pizza guy or food delivery I tip beacuse of gas prices. I dont tip my mailman or UPS guy. They dont pay for gas and drive company vehicles. Its their job to deliver packages.
BUT a drivethrough window server? Give me a break. They took my order rang up may sale on a register and handed me a coffee. And if I did tip how much? Servers get 20% so if my coffee is 2 buck do I tip 20 cents? I see people drop a buck or two. Thats crazy.
Tipping is deserved when someone goes above and beyond what they are required to do. IE tipping at bar gets you a stronger drink, maybe a free shot during the night, faster service. Tip a bar tender well and he/she takes care of you. Whats the kid in a drivethrough doing for my tip?
Where does it end. Yeah I hear the whole carma thing but come on. Should we tip the cashier at Walmart or Home Depot? How about the associate at Staples that prints your copies? Heck lets tip the salesman at a dealership because he sold us a car. Lets tip the garbage man for picking up the trash. My job requires perforing service and I dont get tipped. I dont expect it. Its my job. Why should I get tipped for doing my job? Seems today everyone wants something more. Everyone has their hand out expecting more. The key is EXPECTING. Like my wing guy. He expected more than 3 bucks. He probably runs to 10 houses an hour. 3 bucks a house is 30 dollars tax free, plus his 10 bucks an hour salary. I dont make 40 bucks an hour of which 30 is tax free. See where I am going with this?
I worked as a delivery boy for a couple months like three years ago. I used to drive my Envoy Denali that I drove at the time some people would say you don't need a tip if your driving that. And I told them hey its not my fault I am the only one who had a truck and its in the middle of the winter and you were to lazy to get off your butt and pick up your own pizza. Ever since then I have always taken care of my waiter/waitress or delivery person. I know how it is to get a 3 dollar tip on a $25 order it sucks!
I dont tip based on what they drive, secondly he ended up with 4.50 on a 18.78 order. Thats a 25% tip. If that wasnt enough then he should find another job or that shop shouldnt offer delivery. If a delivery person needs a 6-8 dollar tip on a 20 dollar order then delivery shouldnt be offered. The shop should state a min delivery fee then, just like restaurants do for large parties of 10 or more. I am not Ross Perot so I do not have gobs of money to throw out. I didnt coerce anyone in delivering. Its a service the shop offers and charges for, a buck 50. In reality I didnt have to give him a nickel. I paid for delivery. I tipped an added 3 bucks anyway. Its BS to be pissed at me. If a guy needs a 50% tip on an order then let the customer know up front and say hey delivery is 8 bucks, do you still want it delivered? Be pissed at your employer not the innocent customer.
If I like their car, I will tip more. If they drive crap, I will tip more. I usually pick up our food. I love to drive, and I am a tight ass. We go to the same places over and over. I feel like we get better service because we know all the staff and the owners. As for the bar, we go to the same little beer bar. We go 3 or so times a week. I also make my own. (I drink Corona. I get my own mug and Margarita salt and lime and fix it all up myself) We tip $1 first beer, then a dollar everyother beer after. I also clean up after myself(empty bottles, peanut wrapper). We know the owners and are kinda like family.
Well, maybe the wife...or neighbor's wife.

:th_bike-fall: Well, today I picked up my own. I used a shop on my way home. So the delivery guy didnt have to deliver to my house, he doesnt get any tip from me, and the shop loses a sale because I chose one on my way home. Solves the issue. If everyone thinks like me the unhappy delivery guy is gonna end up layed off. 4.50 tip is better than unemployment right?
except in Charlotte you still have all the hotels that get delivery (when I was with Us Airways we had stuff delivered at least twice a day for 4 weeks while in training)
For bars, I usually don't go to many bars where I don't know the bartenders. And the bars I goto, shots don't cost $6.50....they cost $3 if you are lucky. Beers are $1.25 for draft and $1.75 for most bottles.
And I don't carry much cash. I would rather use my card. So here again, if the bartender doesn't give me good service, they don't get a good tip. Everyone else, when paying cash, you tip first and deserve good service afterwards. Not the way I fly. I want to experience the good service first, then I will tip well.
But just so you don't think I am a tightwad, last Friday, went out with some friends. First bar, started a tab with my card, got some beers, total was $14. I tipped $4. That is 28.5%. Second bar we started doing shots, JagerBombs, etc. Bill was $64. I tipped $16. Thats 25%.

Ive done it MLamberts way twice. I got the best service, and the best amount of alcohol from a bar Ive ever experienced those two times. You really should just put a sticker that says "Im a ****ty tipper" on your head so people know ahead of time they are getting nothing special. LOL. Also stay away from Vegas with a ****ty tipping style. They really frown upon that.Quote:
