Anyone else feel like the repairs are never ending on our cars? It's like luck lately to get a week in between something else to fix. Just had the control arm bushings and alignment done a few weeks ago and now I need to get the pressure solenoid in the trans changed which is going to be another $400. Then today I have an O2 code come up and my milage has been worse than last year so I suspected the O2 anyway but now with the code coming up I feel I should change that soon too. Sorry for the rant guys, I'm sure we all get like this at some point though. it would be nice to just be able to drive the car without having to fix things all the time. Oh well, Hopefully work picks up soon!

Well if you don't like it, get rid of your 10 year old car and pay through the ass and make a car payment. Dude, 2 of the things you listed are maintence items, the tranny deal... well its probably got some mileage on it and its 10 years old, **** happens, boo hoo. If thats all you've done to your car and you're *****ing now, you need to quit driving old cars and buy a new car every 3 or 4 years. You won't survive driving anything.

Between people *****ing about maintence items, and people *****ing about working on 10 year old cars, it gets frustrating seeing this ****. Don't people understand that when you have an old car, you'll need to wrench on it now and then? Cars need maintence, just like you do.

Wait till you have to do a major repair, thats all I can say, jeeze....

I totally understand that being an older car there are repairs to do. I have always owned older cars. The last being my 94 sunbird which was great. I hardly had to fix anything over the 3 years I had it and it had 320,000km on it when I sold it to buy the grand prix. I am just finding it frusterating that the grand prix seems to keep having non stop issues lately. Not saying I don't like the car, just hoping it will give me a break soo with the repairs!.

you ever heard that saying " they dont build em like they used to" ? Thats because you either can have performance or reliability, generally not both without buying an 80,000 dollar car.

ha ha this isn't a complaint but i wanna give you a list. My car is 13 and I bought it last year in Feb with 161,000 miles. I now have 169,000 miles. Here is what I have replaced in 14 months

    -both trailing arms
    -fuel pump
    -fuel filter
    -2 outer tie rods
    -2 lower ball joints
    -both front strut mounts
    -alignment
    -both front hub assemblies
    -pads+rotors all 4 corners
    -tps
    -upstream o2 sensor
    -both front power window motors-EGR

    need to replace still
    -MAF
    -IAC valve
    -plugs
    -recall
    -coolant sensor

    I WIN!!!!

while I'm at it how do you know if the solenoid for the tranny needs to be replaced. I have a serious problem with my tranny and I have heard that term a lot on here. Maybe that's what I need. What are the symptoms?

Have you looked at Trannyman's page? That's how I figured it out. Mine only acts up when it gets heated up after longer drives or alot of city driving. It stats shifting really hard and will throw a code if you scan it but won't turn on a light.

You're right, the DON'T make them like the used to. How many 60s and 70s cars do you see still on the road? Very little. Be happy you can even GET a 10 year old car running. My father was amazed that they offered 5 year loans on cars - They used to NEVER last that long. People used to almost always get a new car every 3-4 years, if only because they only lasted that long. Remember when cars didn't even have 6 digits for the odometer, because no one thought the car would last that long? Now, if you don't get 100k out of a car, it's junk. I intend to get 200k at least out of my Impala and pick-up. Grand Prix is now over 100k, but I'll probably get rid of it with in a year to get a bigger family vehicle now that I have 3 children.

I must have gotten a good one! I bought my 98 GPGT use five years ago, and I now got 143K+ miles on her. The last five years have been gas and oil for her. Last week I started some work on her, new Monroe quick struts front and back, new maniford gaskets, radiator hoses,t-stat, new AC compressor, drier,maniford/hose, and Bosch plug wire set and Platinum +4 plugs. My friend and I worked 11 hrs on her last weekend. Drove her in in the morning and drove her home that night. I think I am still ahead of the game, she drive like new and no car payment and my insurance is cheap!
    Happy motoring!
    Thank you, Robert

If you bought the car from new and maintained it properly you'd have far fewer suprises but like most of us you bought it used and with that someone elses headache, but for longevity these cars are great 200 k is not unusual for a powertrain to last, hell back in the 60's you would never get 100k out of an engine before it needed a rebuild the materials that go into modern engines are just that much better,so quit your wining and buy some decent tools and a shop manual if you want to drive an older vehicle.Chico.
