OK, we ordered 20 dollars worth of wings over the phone for delivery, we paid over the phone which included a 1.50 delivery fee. When the guy came we tipped him 3 bucks and he acted pissed and left.
he got 3 from us and 1.50 from the shop so he received 4.50 and we live 3 miles from the place. Am I being cheap or is he being greedy?

He probably doesn't get the delivery fee. However I always go pickup stuff myself so I don't know what is standard tipping for food delivery. Gas prices being what they are and most food delivery people probably get city MPG or even less do to short tripping, it would suck doing that kind of delivery work these days.

F that. I don't tip anybody, unless we actually go to a restaurant. Then if the service is good, they'll get a minimum $4, and it goes up from there. If the delivery guy wants more money, he's in the wrong business IMO. Not to sound like an ass, but I'm picky on how I spend my money.

I tip 3 bucks on a $20 order, but I always tip the delivery guy, they work as hard as the waitstaff at a restaurant and get screwed by the company usually (they are also exempt from minimum wage due to receiving tips)

You said wing guy and I thought you meant Wings for a car. Like a UPS guy. DUH!!I tip a waitress, a pizza person, and the hair cutting girl. I used to be a waitress and we didn't have any money. So we usually tip very well! If she sucks, I won't leave much. Troy is an Over tipper!
19SE92.....I've never seen a hot delivery person. Woman or man.
Our Mazzios guy has a nice GP! I tried a long time ago to get him on here. I tip him more cuz I like his car.

This type of **** pisses me off. People that expect tips. Tips are AKA gratuity. Which means, I leave something if the person goes beyond what I expect for the service. For me, I am not grateful when you simply do your job. It's your freakin job already. You get paid to do it from the start! Now...if you go above and beyond what you are supposed to do and give me great service that I didn't expect. Then, I will be grateful and leave gratuity. But don't expect it and get pissed when I don't leave it. If you don't like the job and don't like what you are getting paid, then find a job elsewhere. There are plenty of jobs out there. Find one that pays better and quit expecting me to carry you in life.

Now, I must say, I do not agree that wait staff at restaurants can get paid less than minimum wage. They should not expect the customer to have to make up for cheap owners. This I think is crazy. But I know the wait staff cannot do anything about it and almost always tip wait staff. But everyone else like delivery people (which I almost never use), bag handlers (which I almost never use), garbage men, mailman, milkman, UPS guy, neighbor, wife, etc...they don't get tips. Well, maybe the wife...or neighbor's wife.

So what you are saying is you expect to pay the same price for food whether you picked it up or have it delivered? I guess the food joints could just raise their prices for everyone to cover for those that want delivery.

I think they should charge for delivery, yes. It's an added service. If they want to advertise free delivery, then I shouldn't have to pay anything extra. Zero. Nothing. I shouldn't be expected to tip either. Again, free. But I shouldn't be expected to pay for my free delivery.

Hence why I save my money and pick up the stuff myself.

As I recall, I've never had food delivered. If they say Free delivery, then I agree it should be free. If out of the kindness of your heart, the delivery person is prompt and friendly, you want to spread your good fortune, there is nothing wrong with that.

What about the drive through coffee places? Starbucks and Dunkin donuts have tip cups sitting right at the window. Now that ticks me off. I am going through a drive through. What the heck is the tip for? I dont tip McDonalds drivethrough, why would I tip a coffee shop? No extra servcie is provided. So how is a tip justified?

a waitress is free table service, so you have the same thing there. Most of the delivery people I know are working their way through school also (so getting a better paying job isn't a great option due to schedule) you also should know if they say free dellivery you are paying for it somewhere else

I can understand that a lot of these people are in hard spots working to feed kids, or whatever. But everyone has to make choices in life. I don't have kids right now because I can't afford them, both with money and my time. So if someone chose to have sex and have a kid, then why should I feel sorry for them? Sure bad things happen to good people. Fires, spouses die, etc. But I give (and give very generously) to charities to help out the less privileged people in my area. If those people are so hard off that they possibly cannot find a better job than $2 an hour at denny's, then swallow their pride and get some help.

But again, I refuse to tip someone who expects me to do so, then gets mad when I don't (as the OP was ranting about). And maybe Michelle is right. Maybe if you work where you get tips, you tip more. I have never worked in a job where I have to tip. But when going out to eat I always tip 20%+. Who knows....

we have a tradition of getting wings every tuesday night, most of the time its 70-100 bucks that we pick up, now that would be a helluva tip if delivered.

Does anyone know what to tip at bars? I usually do 2 drinks then tip a dollar. lately seems all the bars are pretty busy that i've been to and i don't tip at all becuase they are so slow, its bad when you have to send your buddies girlfriend to stand at the bar waiting for some service most of the night... lol
