Jacob (owner of Sundown) designed the Skar and SA.... the Obsidian line is a joint venture between himself and Nick of Stereo Integrity. As such, there are a lot more differences than you may think. About the only thing shared between them is that they all have a 2.5" coil. Skar is designed as it is because it is what Kevin requested of Jacob. I am not missing the point... I am not suggesting for him to go out of his budget and go "super-high end." Skar is very budget for what you get. Not once did I mention, say, a Critical Mass UL12. In fact, I offered to assist him with an enclosure design for whatever sub/subs he chooses. I was simply pointing out erroneous statements made by yourself for the benefits of others. "Regular, low-budget, average subs" will perform based upon their proper implementation, and all of them are different. There is no rule of thumb about certain size subs for certain music. I am not attempting to offend you, but that whole concept is absolutely incorrect.

. 15s are bigger, heavier, will move slower, longer further excursion for longer lower beats.

Depends on the woofer. Excursion depends on the surround and the motor of the woofer and above all the enclosure.

You guys ar scaring me haha. My system already sounds great to me, I'm just looking for something that will compliment it..

Do you think twelves are too big for me? I listen to pop, alternative, dance, and some rock. Not usually rap.

And if I'm looking for more of a compliment than overpowering bass, is sealed better?

The dimensions are 5.4" x 5" x 2.7" deep. You are going to need to break out the fiberglass if you want to put them in the factory position. You realize that most 5 1/4's that go in the door are only 2.5" deep? I would say to make your own pod and move them around the car and see where they dont overpower everything. Once you find it, mount them there.

I've been on my phone all week so I didn't really see the dimensions when ordering. Haha I assumed when it says 1" tweeter that it would not be nearly that big.. Maybe that is the shipping dimensions? I'll see when I get home friday.

Sorry for all the banter. Everyone thinks they know more than everyone else about automotive speakers and sound, sometimes tempers get the best of us. Anyhow, back to the business at hand. If you want a solid tight bass that sounds true to the music, go with a midsize sealed enclosure. And no, two 12's isn't normally too much, unless you don't amplify the other 4 speakers, than may be. Rule of thumb is that you can always turn the gain down if its too loud for you, but not up if its not loud enough.

Yea those dimensions can't be right.. On the 3/4" tweeters it says 7" wide.. Ha who knows

After looking back through this thread, you bought coaxial speakers, these speakers have the tweeter right onto of the midrange speaker, so it may be a 1" wide tweeter, and a somewhere close to 7" wide midrange, these tweeters will not be removable and therefor cannot be mounted in the factory locations. You would have need to have bought component speakers if you wanted a separate midrange and tweeter setup.

Well the other 8 (or atleast the 6, I won't amplify the tweets)speakers won't be
amplified til probably mid summer. I plan on having these subs in early may. But I'm still thinking two twelves sealed. Cuz I want a good punch..


stupid question, but can you turn down the amount if power an amp sends out?

Haha no I'm not dumbbb, I do have coaxials, but I ordered some separate 1" tweeters. I'll just return them if they sound bad, dont fit anywhere, or are overpowering.

Okay, now looking at sealed loaded enclosures, rockford fosgate looks like the best for the money. Both the ten inch and twelve inch dual sub enclosures got 5 star ratings on amazon. What do you think for the type of music I like? Ten or twelve.. Both have the same power ratings.

I think I'm gonna go with the tens because i found them for a great deal with a 250w amp and hookup kit.

Can you post a link to what your looking at? 250W isn't all that much in all honesty, I would look at closer to 500w for a pair of subs.

Prefab won't make buying or installing any easier, I'm not sure why you're limiting yourself. You still have to run all the wires, set all the gains and filters properly, and set it up in a good location.

The tweeter is 1" but its just the silver cone thing in the middle. The rest of it is a horn and magnet and thats the part thats so big. In this link you can scroll down to "Product Details" and it will give you the dimensions.
