Ok so I just got my car as you know. Engine light came on with the "check gas cap." So I checked it, did nothing then got the code from autozone.

Is this an easy noob fix? I found this online. Sounds exactly like my issue.
    http://www.gpona.com/forums/04-08-gr...ap-t18743.html

Basically it has no problems since then except it didn't start parked uphill at te dentist.

I can't really see any gas leaks or anything. I'm hoping it is the part behind the wheel, seems like a $20 fix? I can change a tire. Those are my credentials.
    Any advice?

take the left rear wheel off, then the plastic liner, its right there, make sure the hoses are on and the sensor is connected.

could be the canister or the sensor on the canister has gone bad.

you can also check for a broke vac line on the back of the engine at the other evap senor.

You wouldn't happen to have a picture of what I would be looking for on the engine do you? I'm very new to this lol. I've been a let them fix it kind of person. Dealerships loved me for that.

I think I know what I'd be looking for behind the wheels.

And is this something that will seriously screw up the car or is it just something that will make it not want to start?

it looks like this on a s/c engine, you seem to be n/a, not sure if you have one or not, id think you should. its got 2 vac lines off it and a plug.

the canister should look something like this.

    Ok, thanks.
    While I'm down there....
Should I try the propane test for vaccine leaks in the hoses? I just watched a YouTube video where a guy did that

    Ohhh and another thing.

The upper gaskets were all replaced by the dealer the week I bought the car.
The end of the video said if you check for leaks and repair them the ecu has to be reset or it tries compensating for the old leak. ?? Could this just be another possibility? They just forgot to reset the ecu maybe?

not sure what vid your talking about. but do check for broken vac lines around the engine, they get brittle and break, may have seemed fine when they put it back on, and now it could be loose fitting or cracked down the side of the line.

hes checking for vac leaks, most of use use carb cleaner lol same deal. if the idle jumps up, your found the leak area.

Ok great! Looks like I won't be bored tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find!
    Thanks.
The dealership charges 83 for a smoke test. I asked what about If I supply the cigar and he didn't get it.
Hopefully I can accomplish this myself lol. Seems easy enough.

The pcm performs tests on various components each ignition cycle. Some things need a lot of good tests to reset, some require being reset.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Ok let me ask you this before I jack up the car and look for leaks.

Would not resetting the computer cause the car to not start without a little revving of the gas? And what do you mean when you say after so many good tests?

Would it be worth resetting manually (well having someone) to see if that all it is?

the pcm keeps track of each run cycle, if it passes 3 cycles, iirc the light will go off on its own.

or unplug the battery for 30 minutes will clear it, or use a scanner to clear the code.

and being you've got a dbw TB im sure the throttle dont even open before it starts up, even if you push the gas pedal. gas enters via the injectors too, not at the TB.

Ok. It is weird...It wouldn't start uphil at all without revving it right as the Rpms come down. I'll see what that does and ill be right back. I have to make some coffee or I'm going to start cussing out my dogs uncontrollably and then I'll get out there.

I have another slightly off topic but still relevant question.
Is there a thread on must have tools to fix your own car? I'm fairly certain most of what I have is carpentry stuff so I will need to be stocking up on tools for the car now.

a simple 30 piece 6 point socket set will get most jobs done, some pliers, a 1/2 breaker bar and a few choice large sockets will be needed if you do hubs or ales. and maybe a puller of sorts, but they can be rented for free at the parts stores if you dont want to pay for one. most pullers run in the 20 dollar range, not to bad really.

8,10,13,15,17,18,19,22 mm sockets in both deep and shallow. A t30 is useful for some of the oddball parts. A safety torx t20 for the maf sensor if/when that goes bad, a multimeter, and that's it.
