I just purchased a 96 Grand Prix to help save a little on gas money. It has a strange problem with the transmission. It almost acts like TCC lockup applies right after it shifts into 2nd gear. Also it does not want to downshift when coming up to a stop. I have felt quite a bit of shudder as well. Every now and then at highway speed TCC will kick out and rpms will jump up 300 rpms and then it drops back down.

Please let me know if you can help.

    Thanks!

Lockup shouldnt come on in 2nd gear, especially after the shift. The lockup feed in the trans only has fluid/pressure in 2nd gear and up, so you may have a bad lockup solenoid or a stuck lockup valve in the valve body. If the solenoid is bad OR the valve is stuck it will feel like it doesnt want to downshift coming to a stop and near kill the engine until it drops back into 1st and cause a shudder feeling. These transmissions have a common valve body wear problem that will cause excessive lockup dropout and slippage after driving on the highway for an extended period of time.

How difficult is it to repair the valve body and solenoids? Are they located on the side of the transmission?

    Thanks for your help.

It will require dropping down the trans go remove the side cover of the trans, then you will have access to the valve body.

I have access to a 98 4T65E valve body and solenoids for free. Will any of those parts swap over to the 4T60E?

    Thanks

The two shift solenoids are the same but that is it, nothing else will work. Its not worth the risk of using used solenoids since there is a lot of labor involved to get to them.
