Wondering if a moaning coming from the tranny under the abs pump is normal. I stuck my head by the abs pump to listen, Sound gets slightly more noticeable when shifter is placed into 1st gear, this is all while the vehicle is at a stand still. On my old a-body cutlass with the 3.8 i noticed when placing shifter in 1st when transmission was failing i would get a growling and grinding noise much more noticeable, sounded like the bands.

The vehicle has 99k miles and a tranny failure at this mileage doesn't seem too likely. although I have read that the 4t60e m-15 may develop a valve body issue.

    can someone enlighten me.

Are there any other symptoms beyond the noise? Any feeling or odd shifting?

When was the last trans service?
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

just bought the car, seems to shift okay so far, I have noticed though since removing the battery and replacing it; it seemed to shift a little different probably the pcm recalibrating........ it seems like it jumps into and out of overdrive around 35 - 45 probably normal from slowing down and speeding up (i dont think the average person would even notice without looking for something to be wrong).

I dont think the tranny was ever serviced, was going to wait for a nice day out to pull the pan and check for metal / change the filter and add some new fluid.

I have pulled the tranny line on the radiator on my other car let it pump out all the old stuff and shut the car off immediately as soon as it quit pumping so i didnt burn the pump and add brand new fluid when i did my first service after purchasing. I dont believe in tranny flushes and picking up bad debris from vehicles before me that think a tranny flush is going to fix there going dead tranny.

This is normal operation. It is also what increases the wear to the 4th clutch hub and will eventually strip it out and you will loose OD.

Unless of course you drive it like BillBoost, then it should be ok

Any in-car fixes, or fixes that dont require a full tear down?
will the tranny fail under these conditions?
I am a hard driver because other people dont know how to drive and get me a little angry so i tend to agressively get out of peoples ways by passing them in any type of car I have, is there anything to prolong 4th(od)?

What actually causes this noise, it doesnt sound too healthy, kind of like a groaning, something grinding while rotating, worn spline bearing kind of sound...

Easiest way to preserve a transmission is to take it easy. I have a 97 GT with the 3.8 N/A and I can keep my rpm's below 3000 easy. Our particular year/trim have the old 4t60 trans that is weaker than the other years. Best option would be to drive less aggressively, save some gas while your at it, and save up for a 4t65. $2000 should put you in good shape.

I could of swore the 97 Grand Prix Vin K 3800 had a 4t65e, and the SE 3100 has the 4t60e, that's what alldata was showing anyhow. I did see however the 97 bonneville 3800(k) has the 4t60e.

I'll have to check the identification plate on the trans.

yep, mitchell on-demand also shows that its a 4t65e, i will eventually rip the tranny out and it rebuild with heaver duty parts, clutch's etc. just so i can keep the car as a daily driver and winter beater, im planning on buying a truck, avalanche or silverado to drive on the weekend and up north, to pull the boat and sleds and hoping to get 300k out of the car , i know the 3800 can make it there with regular maintenance just fine and chassis parts, but the transmission is all that has me worried. at 99k i figured i could get another 25-50k out of the transmission before a overhaul is due.

can one of the regular post master give me some insight. heh

I would check it yourself. I have never heard of a 97 GT with the 4t65 from the factory.

One way would be to keep the shifter in "3" and not "D" unless you plan to sustain a speed over say 42mph. This will keep it from hunting in and out of OD.

And the noise could be the pump. See what you get once you change the fluid/filter. Could just be a clogged up filter which is starving the pump for fluid. This would cause it to whine a bit.

Have you checked the fluid level while it is fully hot/in park/idling?

little bit of a power trip are we, I was informed that the tranny in the car is a 4t60e, wanted to get out of 4t65e but they are close enough for trouble shooting for someone that knows either of the two so ban me, ban my ip, there are 30 different forums I can goto.

You're making new threads when there is no reason.

You have one that is open and you're getting results.

I can move it, but I'd rather not seeing as i'd much rather close it.

    You have an attitude.

I don't see how you could possible contribute anything to this forum.

And as a result, your presence here is undesired.
