its not a problem to do that. its also ok to have the laptop plugged in to a wall socket. its what i do when im working through my car. i got a piss poor battery right now.
its not ok to power your laptop from a power inverter from the cars power port. thats a huge no no.
Laptop plugged into the house. I can for sure order a new adapter I have no idea who made this one was bought from a member of clubgp.com he sent me a driver I installed and it says its running properly. But, there is nothing to tell me what kind it is. If you've got ideas on what to buy im all about it. Specifically because Im getting ready to drop the mid size turbo and install a t78 I need to be able to make changes on the fly.

I know this might sound simple/stupid to some, but I'm not sure if Midknight has tried this. You should be able to leave the speed setting alone (115 IIRC). Then only use 1 port on your laptop and remember which one it is (for example, only use the bottom port on the left side). If you're changing which USB port you're using it's obviously going to change the COM port. I didn't bother going into device manager to figure out which USB port was tied to which COM port, so I just kept trying to register DHP on different ports until I got to the right one (usually 3 or 4, depending on your setup).
Post up some pictures of the adapter you're using so we can help you out more.

This ^ is the preferred adapter for pretty much everyone.
