I hate emissions codes....my check engine light came on and I ran the car to Autozone where they pulled codes P0053 and P0136. I replace both O2 sensors but still see the check engine light. Being in Massachusetts, I need to resolve it to get an inspection sticker. Advice?

Did you clear the codes after changing the sensors?

I'd go and check the harnesses for any damage.

    Thanks
I can turn a wrench, but I'm a noob with codes & electrical issues. I thought the computer would read clean if the problem had been fixed and the light would go off on its own. How do I clear the codes?
I did inspect the wiring quickly when I changed the sensors and did not see any obvious problems there.

Most codes will go of within 2 cycles of the problem being fixed. I'm not 100% sure how long/ what dictates a 'cycle' but I think like 20 minutes of highway driving at temp is a cycle. I've heard multiple things

Easiest way is to disconnect your battery for an hour. Since you live in an emissions state, I don't know if Autozone etc will clear codes for you.

i got one of them cheap 12 dollar scanners off ebay. work just perfect for scanning and clearing codes. parts stores, most wont clear it for you.

Success!! (I think). Disconnected the battery last night for an hour or two. Drove to work this morning and no check engine light.
    Thanks everyone.

Most codes are set to two bad tests to turn on the MIL and three good tests in a row to turn off.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Thanks again. Replacing the (2) O2 sensors seems to have done the trick. Once I disconnected the battery for a while, the light has stayed off for a couple of days.
Of course, I did get a flat tire on the way to work this morning.....dammit, it's always something.
This weekend I have to see if I can get an inspection sticker with a bad strut.
