If you are asking for the purpose of being able to tap into your PCM to scan it, then when you buy a scan tool, it will come with a cable in which to hook your laptop up to the car. Depending on how your laptop is set up, you can use a serial connector or a USB connector from your laptop to the ODB II cable and then the other end of the ODB II cable will have a connector to hook up to the port that is under your dash around where your right knee would be when driving.
Same would be true also if you bought tuning software. There are several scan tools available to use for the purpose of monitoring things like KR and fuel trims. What you would need is a scan tool that is capable of reading GM enhanced parameters. If you just get a basic scan tool, you wont be able to monitor KR and things like the transmission.
Ok now lets say i found a program cheap but it did have the wire to hook it up. would i be able to just get the wire?
Well you're saying 'wire' like its a single wire that you have to splice in or something, but thats not the case. Its a cable that has specific connectors and such to make it work. That said, you can go here:
OBD2Cables.com
And see if they have what you would need. Im not sure what program you have so I would not be able to point you to which cable you would need.
Ok thanks. Im not exactly sure what it is either. Im guessing the program is a bootlegged program. If i sent you the page I got it from would that help? if your willing to help let me know. thanks
Sure, I'll take a look at it. But most Scan tools have some type of interface box that goes between your pc and the odb ii cable. So even if you have the software it may still not work without that interface.
this is an ebay auction with the same program i purchased

I gave it a maybe untill I saw the adjust your mileage part, that is so illegal that I cant even comeup with a saying.... but if it works, good find
O yea i know adjusting ur miles is illegal but I'm never gonna use it. I think its worth 20 dollars to try it, Im just hoping it doesn't crash my computer cuz that would suck, and does anyone know what cable i would use to connect my dell to my car to get this program to work? Ive found one that I think might work but just to be sure if someone knows for a fact what I could use can you tell me? Thanks again guys
Well i've never seen a cable that hooks from your car to your computer.
I have a hand held obd2 scanner and it has a cable that runs from it to my car and then scans and then if i want to hook it to my computer it has another cable that plugs into the other end of it that goes to the usb port on the computer....dont get any cables until you recieve it just to be safe...does it say it doesent come with the cable??
I remember on the hpt tuner fourms someone pluged the obd2 plug into there car and the other end (that is suppose to plug into the interface box) into there computer and they were saying the cable and plug got real hot...so i am thinking there has to be either something else that comes with it (interface) or something
Yea i got in contact with the guy that was selling them and he said it was just the software so there is no interface or cables. Yea ill just have to search some stuff and if i find anything ill let you guys know but its not gonna happen for about another 4 weeks cuz im outta the country. What scanner do you have and how much did it cost?
Amazon.com: Equus 3100 Innova Diagnostic Code Reader with Memory Backup for OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles: Automotive
60 bucks + shipping...will come with everything in the picture...let me know
If he doesnt take that, let me know, I may do so. I need a portable reader to keep with me for my customers.
Sure thing. I was hanging onto it because of it being portable like you said...but i realize that i dont use it nearly enough to hang on to it;
hey go ahead and take it cuz im not gonna be back for 4 weeks as i said and im sure ill find something between now and then. Thanks for all the help guys
I have a port on the back of my computer that will work with this cable OBD2Cables.com
Would it be possible for me to connect my computer directly up to my OBD2 port or do i need an interface?
Thats what i ment when i said on the hpt fourms someone did this(bypassing the interface) and it was stated that the cable and plug got real hot....so in other words no
haha oops sorry i forgot about that. ok sounds good. thanks for all your help!!!
