NGK AFX WB help

I could have ask someone about this outside of the forum, but this kind of info may be helpful to others.

My WB should be here tomorrow and there are things I would like to know, if those with these wouldn't mind sharing. This will be a temporary setup for tuning only, then removed.

1. How do you route the sensor wires?
2. Where are you getting the source voltage?
3. Can you share the EIO pid needed for scanning? HPTuners of course.
4. Any Histograms you like to use when WB tuning?
5. Is there anything else I should ask that I haven't...yet?

Lee I have no idea "who" you may be referring to lol..... But here goes

1. For temporary use when I tune cars i just run the wires through the back of the hood and in the side window, but if you are looking for more than just a few hours of testing/tuning and need it in the car a little better than you will need to find a hole in the firewall to run the wires through. There are a few on the drivers side but can be sort of tough to route the wires. The popular spot is through the hole in the passangers side foot area under the carpet. There is a large pass-through boot here and you can open it up and run the wires through here.

2. NGK suggests right on the battery for best voltage and accuracy, so that is what I do when tuning. Again if you are leaving it in the car you arent going to want this left on constantly, so you could either hook it straight to the batter and put a switch on the power wire or wire it to a heavy gauge accessory wire under the dash. You could always just leave it hooked up to the batter all the time and unplug the wires on the back of the gauge when you are done. I like to turn the power on and let the count down timer run down before starting the car so the sensor is warmed up before exhaust goes over it but it isnt necessary.

3. I use the sensor as an input on my MPVI Pro cable, and before i had that i used the EGR position signal wire and changed the formula for the egr numbers and the description of it. I believe you have the pro cable correct? You can use the output of the gauge right into your cable and it makes life a bit easier. On HPTs forum or right in the scanning software there is an option for wideband input and it plugs in its own formula but I found it to be innacurate so I had to make my own formula to work right. You will need to compare the numbers on the wideband gauge with what is on the HPT scanner for accuracy and make changes if needed. You cannot alter the preset HPT wideband formula and have to make your own if needed. In the NGK instructions it gives you a formula to use but I had to alter that also for things to match up. Normally what happens is the gauge may read properly at 14.7, cruising, and read off at WOT one way or the other.

4. I use a histogram for map tuning and you could also do it for maf tuning though I find it easier to manually do this. Im not sure there is one already there and I made my own histogram as it gives you a few empty ones to use. On a side note, you MUST have a PID of the sensors you want to use in a histogram or it wont work.

Dave, I finally have the WB.

The power wires you connected directly to the battery with the little spade terminals?

You didn't add an inline fuse to the hot lead or on-off switch?

Any anti-seize in the threads of the sensor?

Looks like only one wire goes to the HPT Pro?

I'm like the kid at Christmas that received cool battery operated toys and no batteries.

Haha, I have my connection fused Lee and it would be a good idea incase a wire gets pinched or somehow shorts out which would be hard to do with the mesh cover over the wires but anything can happen and a fuse is better than a new wire harness to replace because they cost half of the whole setup! I use a little anti-seize on all 02 sensors as they can be a real bear to take back out. I was thinking those sensors already had some as a lot of them do but maybe that one didnt. Yep just one wire goes to your cable and you are set. When I tune cars I hook up to the + feed on the top of the fuse/relay box under the hood and one strut tower nut for the ground as they are close and easy to access but again this is temporary at best for a quick tuning session. The instructions say at the battery for best accuracy but any heavy gauge wires with minor voltage drop should be fine.

Thanks again Dave. I'm only going to have my WB hooked up for the occasional scan, so the temp setup is fine for me as well.

I may tap my donrome STB bracket and put a small ground screw there. Seems NGK was most adimate about not changing the dual ground wire part, and it comes with such a tiny spade terminal.

Yeah I didnt care for the small thin terminals either but didnt want to alter anything though Im sure I will soon enough as mine has been crushed and thinned beyond its limits lol

Yep those terminals were a poor choice on their part IMO. I have an Optima battery so I may look around for some type of sleeve to go on the unused top posts and hook the AFX up there.
Weather is bad and my car is at the dealership getting a new tach.

It was funny, the guy that drove the car off to the service dept equivilent of a doctors office waiting room, was jabbing the pedal as he drove it. Guess they don't get modded Impala's in very often.
