Thread: Bed Liner Issue

So, I got a really sweet deal on trade in for the Grand Prix. I bought a ranger with a v6, 5spd, and it has 25k miles on it. It is in need of something to protect the bed. I have thought about drop-ins, roll-ons, and spray-ins. Here is where it gets interesting. The previous owner took it upon themselves to use the aerosol bed liner on the bottom of the bed. They didn't prep it very well it and it is peeling near the cab. The stuff is very thin and feels like it would come off very easy but obviously it would take some work. I took a pressure wash(1300psi) and it didn't phase it so I assume that it would take some elbow grease to get it off. There is also over spray on the sides of the bed up about 4 inches on all the sides and they also did the
tailgate.

If I have a spray-in done they will either let me take the stuff off or they will for 50 dollars and hour extra on top of the 425 they quoted me for the job. I had also thought about the drop-in since the bottom is already coated somewhat. The drop-in will not have much effect on that stuff since it is harder than paint. Then there is the roll-on stuff such as Herculiner. I amthinking about doing this as well but i wonder if the other stuff will have to be completely gone before I would be able to apply it and be sure the stuff would not flake off or peel.

So, what do you guys think?

IMO, get a roll on kit, and prep the whole bed. If you can get a 2500+psi pressure washer and keep the tip close, you should be able to get the ****ty aerosol liner off. But it does take some time. (did a friends ranger that way)

Other option is a heat gun, and a putty knife, and be careful not to burn yourself.

If the rest of the current bedliner is holding on well, then just prep the areas it's coming off, and use the roll on over it.

Best option in my opinion would be to pay the extra $50 an hour and have them remove it before spraying on a new liner.

Anything you use is going to remove it will be abrasive and damage paint. If it takes the paint off, you deal with the bed rusting anyway. If they mess up the paint removing it, they are liable.




If you just wanna go the cheap route, sand blast the old stuff out and roll on a new liner that way.

The sweet deal is in turn the amount of money they gave me was equal to the pay-off on the car. I was able to get out from under something that I feel was headed to be a money pit IMO. I won't be getting into the details in why I believe that. Other than that, we needed a truck. The fact that is a truck will work better for me from a maintaince stand-point because I am able to work on it easier. Since I had my TFCC injury on my left wrist and still have severe instability after two surgeries I thought it best to look for something that would suit my needs better from a sense my wrist works better when not placed in crazy angles.

So, do you think the roll-on stuff will actually stick to the aersol liner? I was wondering if I would need to take that junk off before I preped it for the roll-on.

As long as that aerosol is sticking to the truck bed well, then yes.

i used the Herculiner on my 03 gmc. it sticks pretty damn good, ( i did the bed sides and the tail gate) i also used a rubber mat on the bed floor as i used it for a real work truck, and the rubber mat just kept stuff from sliding better.

the only thing i dont like about the roll on Herculiner. is its a 2 step job, one coat, and then a second coat 16 hours later, so you need to time it just right when you do the 1 st coat, so you your still awake or with in the time limit to get the second coat on. i did mine at night, woke up the next morning and did the 2 nd coat.

your truck there will only take 1 gallon, ( and should have some left over for touch ups if needed) and for under 100 bucks is well worth it. vs the 400 from rhino liners.

and the prep work is work to, the whole bed needs to be scuffed with a scotch bright pad.

Thanks for the input guys! I don't want to go over the bed rails with it but I do want to go over the tailgate. I will scuff up the aerosol stuff and the rest of the bed and clean it with Xyzlene or whatever it is called. The Xyzlene may do something to the aerosol liner so i will test it out in a small area before I get crazy with it.

if you read the directions it says to tape off where you dont want the coating to go. so tape off the painted area of the tail gate, i went to the edge with it, looked more complete. i also ran a tape line under the bed rail side, you cant see it but its better than the line being all over the place, and the front of the bed, where you can see the line.

also check to see if you have small 1/8 inch drain holes in the front of the bed, ( at the front in the bed lower rails) if so, after you paint them over, clear them with a tooth pick or something, so your bed bottom rails drain still. had this on my 03, no idea if fords do this, i also had the big holes in the front corners of the bed.
