Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
They wont be able to tell if the rack is bad if it is internal, which it likely is.
For the rack you just need to verify if you have magnasteer or not. You can crawl under the car to see if you have a plug in, or you can check your RPO codes. The sticker is in the trunk under the panel that covers the spare tire.
Replacing it isn't super difficult. The only "specialty" tool you need to make sure you have is a 18mm line wrench.
#1 Jack up car, support with jack stands under the frame, and take off tires.
#2 Pop tie rods out, and some people recommend unbolting sway bar end links.
#3 Place jack under rear of subframe and unbolt rear 2 rear subframe mount bolts.
#4 Lower subframe about 2 inches to gain access to mount bolts and line nuts
#5 Using the line wrench remove the power steering lines from the rack.
#6 I don't recall the size of the mount bolts but I am thinking its 18mm. I know the nut on the backside of the bolt is, but can't remember if the head is larger.
#7 At this point you should be able to start maneuvering the rack out. (If it is magnasteer don't forget to unplug it first)
That's the basics. There is a really good video on YouTube that I watched to verify some things before I started.
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
I think it has magna steer. Rock auto had the sku's. If it has NV7 or NV8 it has variable effort steer/Magna steer. I found the info out from rock auto and A1 Cardone site.
There is an AC Delco, A-1 Cardone and ATSCO brand. Any reccomendations?
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
I think its N40 (no magnasteer) or NV8 (magnasteer)
I put a Cardone in mine. I bought it online from Advance and used a coupon code. That saved me on shipping, and saved me on returning the core.
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
Mine says NV7 which is also magma steer.
Just ordered PN: 22-1023 from advance. In stock at local store.
$177.96 -$50 discount for code WD522
$127.96 +$12.44 tax

A-1 Cardone has a video on their site.

Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
Mine was about that, but a little more because it was not magnasteer, go figure.
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
Are the Rack mounts good? Are the rack bolts tight? Any play in the hubs?

Could the new ISS be bad?
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
The slop came after replacing it
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
I highly doubt the new ISS is bad. Like I already said, I had the exact same thing happen. Replaced ISS and noticed slop. Replaced rack and slop was gone.
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
I can't seem to get the alignment even close after replacing the rack and the slop still seems to be there. Could there be an issue with the upper steering shaft?
Is there a way I can talk to someone?
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
Another thing to do is maybe unbolt the steering shaft from the rack and rebolt it to verify it is seated properly
When I first tightened mine on the new rack something didn't feel right, so I loosened it and retightened it and it seemed better and felt good once done.
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
So after a long day of working on the vehicle. Advance auto sold me the wrong rack it is 1/2 inch longer on side and 3/4 inch short on the other. The part description online for both rock auto and advance said that 22-1032 would fit an 06 GP GT. Apparently not.
After taking the original one out, I put it right next to the new one and everything seemed to look about right from above other than the steering knob song continued to put the new one in, thinking I could maneuver it to be correct. I was so wrong. 😔.
After a beer to calm my temper, I thought why not check the fit of the ISS on the old rack. It was snug. For ****s and giggles, I removed the new ISS installed in the car and put it on the old rack and it was super loose. After further comparing the two and how they fit on the rack knob, I realized the new ISS was almost completely rounded and only had small flats on the side and this is where I was getting the 1 inch of play in the streering.
I reinstalled the original rack and returned both the rack and ISS and requested a new ISS. I compared the new ISS to the recently purchased one and found thyr new part to have more of a flat on each side and less round. Defective ISS from Dorman. 😡
I put the new ISS in and verified there wasn't any play in the lower connection and the reattached the upper and all was good and tight! I performed a make shift alignment using a rope around all 4 tires and got it pretty damn close. I took her for a test drive and she drives like new. No clunk in the column and steering is tighter than tight. 😄
Thanks for all your help guys!
I now know how to replace a rack if I ever need to. It took about 3 hours to remove the old on and reinstall the new one and about 45 mins to reinstall the original once I knew what I was doing.
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
damn thats a crappy day. glad its all fixed up now.
damn racks are easier the second time, didnt i say that? lol
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
Wow that sucks.
Also, you either wrote the wrong number down, or just typed it wrong here because 22-1032 is for a Buick Lucerne. 22-1023 is the number you would need.
As for the fitment of the ISS the looseness is what I felt too and I did a bunch of crap to make sure it wasn't the ISS causing the loosness. In my case it was the definitely the rack causing the issue. There was a slight "wandering" that there before I changed the ISS and I wasn't sure I could attribute it to the rack until the ISS was no longer binding.
Having to change the rack twice in 1 day would suck. I hope I never have to change mine again, but I'd rather change it again than do that damn ISS. Eff that thing.
Re: Loose steering after replacing intermediate steering shaft on 06 GP GT
Glad you got it fixed. No trying to be a dick but I did say Dorman was crappy. Defects do happen but Dorman **** doesn't last that long. IK I'm just gonna pay the coin for a revised dealer one, if they no longer have the grease kit, when or if mine fails.
