On my mom's car (2011 Nissan Versa Hatch). She said she hit a pothole last week and it's been making a clunking noise when she turns the wheel. The driver's side wheel well was about half an inch from rubbing the tire, so I jacked it up and this is what I saw.

I know sometimes the spring will break overtime but I've never seen it jump off of the strut. I got a spring compressor from Autozone so I'll be tearing into it tomorrow.

There might be a TSB and recall for that.

Might wanna look it up, call the dealership.

Google into it more, I found 1 link.

I checked the VIN and no recalls. I'll call a dealership tomorrow just to confirm.

If not I'll just take it apart and reinstall everything. The spring isn't broken so I'll just re use it.

It sure does look broken on the bottom to me, see where it's all rusted.

Yeah you're right. I'm reading on NHTSA's site that this has happened to a bunch of other people too. Looks like I'll be replacing some stuff.

I've seen it happen already at work, same with the Hyundai Sante Fe front coils that snap and those are always on national back order.

DO you know what year range it happens on the Sante Fe? Guy I work with has one and I'd like to give him a heads up if his is possibly affected.

I think 01-06 had a recall, then I know the second gens from 07-12 still had the issue.

We've had atleast 2-3 of the 09ish to 12's come in with snapped front coils. They had warranty on them so thats why the national back order. Otherwise I think you can buy new aftermarket struts.

They always seem to break at low speeds and over bigger bumps, you'll hear the spring hit the ground and under side of the car lol, had it happen on the test drive once too.

Wow that is crazy, lucky it didn't damage anything else like the brake line it seems to be sitting on.

The complete strut setup looks fine, especially for that price.

Yeah I know. A lot of people who filed complaints online said the spring shredded their tire when it broke. There definitely should be a recall on this.

Wow, a 4 year old spring and it snapped already. Yay Chinese steel

My stock 15 year old springs may be sagging, but they sure as heck aren't broken.

KYB quick struts are installed. Somehow I managed to crack the windshield while removing the wiper arms (by hand).

New windshield will be installed tomorrow. I'll take some pictures of the damage if I remember to.
