So im looking to buy a second car, I like my daily but I can move anything big in it, or tow. looking for about 5000lb capacity.
Ive been looking and craiglist has some promising cars. looks like within my budget I can get the following
    1. Suburban 90s (some are cheaper but need a head or trans etc)
    2. expedition (usually looks bad but drivable)
    3. Blazer s10
    4. explorer
    5. aerostar 4wd

the suburban and expedition are my first choices, but they usually need some work to pass inspection bearings, ball joints etc.
if I find something sub 1000 im willing to do some major repair within reason.

not having owned any of these before is there anything I should avoid, any problems I should avoid?
have I missed anything in the list?

@ 1500 your buying a sh it box. any 4x4 in working order is worth 2 grand easy and it still could need work.

id not get a explorer either, damn that things been a headache for a friend of mine since day one. im doing a trans swap in it this week i think. just add to the list of crap gone bad, trucks only got like 55,000 on it too. and its a 05. i so hate fords.

his cousin got a expedition, the whole front end was shot and he over paid at like 8 grand for it too. and it drinks gas like crazy.

I live in Virginia, and a lot of the cars im looking at are in northern va (outside dc) where anything big is devalued.
Im expecting to spend some cash getting it in order, part of what I want is something to tinker on. (my daily is a 15 under warranty and I need to work on something) I kind of share the ford hatred, I just see a lot of them.

If I really have to go to 2k id be ok with that.

id go out and kick a bunch of tires then, test drive em all and shop around, bring a jack with you to test out the front ends and the U joints and stuff.

parts add up so fast on trucks.

if the trucks a 2500 up, parts double in price. my 03 gmc HD 2500, a pitman arm was 250 in hand. where the 1500 was like 75 bucks. parts are much large and beefier, and cost more.

good luck on the search, dont jump on the first one you see unless its really what you like to see maint wise and priced right.

i told my friend to drive his exploder to a dealer and trade it in, but dont park it so they would have to back it up lol ( trans lost reverse) time to get rid of it in my book. ( plus he already hates it ) but its paid for and he wants the tranny done.

You can't go wrong with a 90s Burb or a full sized blazer/tahoe/Jimmy/Yukon. Stay away from the S-10 blazer, it has a worthless underpowered v6 that gets the same gas mileage as the 350 full sized trucks.
