I have a 5.1 stereo receiver hooked up to my computer through the 3.5mm headphones jack. I was wondering if there is a better way to connect the stereo to the computer, how are you guys doing it?

Optical cable is the best. S/PDIF You will never get 5.1 out of the receiver over 3.5mm.
Am I safe to assume you are using onboard audio? What motherboard do you have?

I couldn't see what motherboard was installed. the receiver is a bit dated and dosent have a lot of input options.

Doesn't matter what motherboard it has its a laptop and doesn't have optical audio out I am sure.
Model of the stereo would help as well.

the bed was calling my name last night, so I heeded. the stereo is a Kenwood VR 716. I traded like 2 boxes of ammo for it.
