I built a radio for work, it's basically a sony deck and some scosche walmart junk 5x7's. The deck advertises 52Wx4 channels, which I think is more like 20 watts RMS, 50W peak per channel. I'm only using 2 channels. Problem is, my workplace is so loud, even at max volume I can't really hear the music. I'm thinking of building a slightly larger box capable of holding a small (100w RMS 2 channel) amp, and upgrading speakers. They can't really be much bigger than 5x7, since the radio has to fit in a locker at the end of the day. Any suggestions on speaker/amp setups? Looking for something cheap too.

All of the parts need to be somewhat compact, meaning less than 8 inches wide and somewhat shallow, since the radio box is approximately 9 inches wide by 7 inches deep - barely enough to hold the head unit and run wires behind it.

There's about 10 pawn shops in my area, I may check them out this weekend.

Lol, chat breaker here... I'm not allowed to use earphones at work, ear plugs are required. sound levels regularly exceed 120db.

For that reason, I need some efficient speakers (more db per watt) than the cheap scosche 5x7's I'm currently using.

I wouldn't worry about wattage the way you are. I would look for speakers that are efficient for the power you have available. Getting higher wattage speakers may result in less volume assuming you have the same power run to them.
