all i can say is the ford will probably be more reliable, and have a much better and more reliable a/c system.. got a friend in Ks that has a 95 with something like 300k on his vic, and it is running like new with the coldest air... ad as far as i know the only problem he has had with it, is the cable that switches from hot to cold broke...

now idk what you are looking for in a beater, if you want something to run around in, or a winter car, or a dd... but for just something to run around in, get something japanese, doesnt really mater what it is, honda or toyota imo, but it will be reliable, good milage, and will probably last you until you get ready for a new one...

also if you dont want a rice burner a good alternative is a saturn s-series... any of them, they are good cars, maybe not as fast or reliable as a honda, but with a single cam (sl1, sc1, sw1) they can easily get 40+ mpg, and the sl's have plenty of interior room.. if you want a little more power get a twin cam (sl2, sc2, sw2) and get a 5-spd, and you can still get a good 35-40 mpg....

My friends 00' saturn 4 door 5 speed SL1, is a pain in the ass to drive. The gear ratio's are retarted in 1st and 2nd gear, by 10 or 15mph you have to shift, and the clutch is horrible. If your going to get a saturn id highly recommend an auto. If i was looking for a daily i would get a 97-03 buick regal.

My friend has an impala interceptor with the light still on it. It is funny watching the break lights light up when we are driving in it. lol I think the crown vic would be a good choice.

I always thought about putting my motor and transmission in one of these. Tinting the windows, then putting my GPS and radar detector and such in plain view on the front window.

If you want a great beater get a '96 Buick Park Avenue. I beat the hell out of that thing consistently almost everyday for 2 years straight, put it in the ditch multiple times (it landed on it's side one time), went off-roading with it, you name it and the only repair I had to do was replace the oil pan that I had demolished from jumping some railroad tracks hehe . Surprisingly it was amazing in the winter too, easily 10x better than my GTP. I put in the ditch several times snow drifting lol and everytime it managed to drive out on it's own even in pretty deep snow. Great car, plus it's got a 3800 Series 2 in it .

Okay another question to the Canadians.
Can i buy one straight from the RCMP without going to auction and about how much does a '98 go for at auction.

just to comment on the saturn, i had a 95 SL1 (all saturns have the samen engine/trans from 91-02, just single or twin cam) and it was great, one thing is they do have easily breakable transmitions, they are not a good car to burn out in... the pin in the final drive brakes easily when its put under constant stress (burn outs by dumping the clutch)

sold mine and got the legend, deff an upgrade... my saturn was a completely base car, manual windows, only option it had (and i know this because i have the original window sticker) was a/c.. but it did have 25% mirror tint, and some nice rims... anyway they are good cars if you take care of them... but they are by no means a race car, and if you think they are, then you should stick to hondas....
