Thread: Looking at external hard drives......

Like the title says. I am not a computer guy, so I am unsure of where to start or what is good. This will mainly be for pictures for the "just in case" happens to our current computer. Any insight would be great. Thanks.

solid state drive for sure. size is up to you, but i have a 500GB that i can't even start to fill up because i don't store giant files (like movies).

i have a seagate. between them and a couple of the other top brands you can't go wrong. you'll probably end up spending $75-100 depending upon the one you get.

you can buy locally for that price and you won't have to wait.

but yes, anything similar will be fine. they all kind of work the same, anyway.

there is not much locally in my area except Wal-Mart and radio shack. I get free 2-day shipping from my Amazon prime acct

Seeing how your goals of an External Hard Drive are primarily for Backing Up Sensitive data you do not want to loose, consider this: http://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-.../dp/B005EWTL7C.Its Water resistant, drop proof(to some extent), and rugged. I have had mine and dropped it several times. No problems or data loss.

Well since its just for pictures...I would say get a small drive but usually its the same price as the larger ones. You say just in case right? So I guess you can use this just in case the entire system blows lol

Thanks for the help guys. This will help when we decide to purchase one. Probably after our taxes arrive. I feel like this is a smart purchase. I'd hare to lose sensitive documents/pictures.

I had bought one of the older style one of these 500GB version http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra...nal+hard+drive no problems for the year I had it then i tore it apart and put it in my PC as a back drive still going strong.

Make sure its USB 3.0. Even if your current computer doesn't have 3.0, your next computer will...its MUCH faster. USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with 2.0 so don't worry about that. 500gb is plenty for just pictures and documents. Might find a 1TB on sale for cheap tho.
