Okay so my father in law just gave me a 2005 Chevy classic with rod knock. I haven't dropped the pan yet to see how bad it is yet. His son ran it out of oil, then drove it 10 miles to our house. I was reading if the damage isn't too bad you can turn the crank then get undersized bearings. Anybody ever done this?

I looked on car part.com and the cheapest motor I found was 900. I don't have that kind of money right now so this will be as cheap as possible. There's a you pull it near Herr that I was gonna check out tomorrow, the only problem is I don't have a hoist. Or a truck.

Does anybody have any advice for a noon?

Get another motor. Fixing the current one you'll probably be on borrowed time meaning you may get it running and then shortly after it break again. If you can't afford the money right now just leave it parked and save up! Your also going to need a hoist to swap it so either borrow one or get one from Harbor freight or Craigslist or something.

Make sure to get the correct motor. There are variances of the ecotec. I know a guy who got the wrong motor (couldn't remember exactly what was diff) and it was going to be more trouble than it was worth to make it work. I don't think that place would let him return it and he was out $$$

    ^^That.

There are little differences here and there. Make sure it's an L61...

Also a good thing to do when everything is out is to remove the cover and clean the ever living sh1t out of the oil passages. They're known to clog up and that's what causes the low oil pressure and eventual knocking.

Make sure the engine gasket is also good. Some of the plastic gasket starts breaking apart after so long, especially with old Dexcool. Better yet replace them before dropping the engine into the car.

I'm aware of the l61. The motor that blew was only in there for a month of so. He just paid 900 to swap it in and then they never checked the oil, which Idk why it was leaking. The motor only had 40000 on it.

I was thinking about calling a you pull it yard here and I was wondering what to expect? ive never been to one Like do they pull the motors or would I have to? I was planning on doing a timing chain and probably water pump while its out.

You pull it yards you pull it yourself but you tend to get the parts for a lot less then if they did for you. Be sure to check what kind of warranty they give you with it.

The downsize is that the cars are usually exposed to the elements and Joe Schmos tend to just take what they need and break everything else in the process so you may get something incomplete and you never know why the car ended up in the yard unless its apparent.

If it was my choice ill get one from a yard that pulls them there selves and gives you some type of warranty.

Okay thanks guys. I'll look around here and see what I can find. I even thought about rebuilding it and all I can find is forged parts. Talk about expensive.

This. I would try a larger chain like LKQ. They will have a computer inventory you can search to see what they have in your area, mileage, etc so you can compare and make a good informed decision. I don't recall the specifics, but I believe they give decent warranties on the motor.
