Do you have a old distributer? You can take the shaft out and put the dear back on, hook to a drill and use that to prime the engine of oil before start up. It would give you a good coat on the lifters.

While soaking the lifters in oil is generally accepted and has been done for decades, I have read on Crane Cams website I believe it was, when I was studying lifters and how you could take them apart, they didnt recommend soaking them. Their primary argument to that was not soaking them allowed the lifters to be more accurately pumped up whereas soaking them may not allow the lifters to always mate up with the right load and such to the pushrods and cam.

Now, that said, the article made sense, came from a company I would imagine knows what they are doing. Have I got the guts to try it out? I dunno, probably not. But the 4.0L I6 is a bit easier to work on than the 3800 in those regards. I think you will be fine but I sure would like to hear what happens if when you start that up. If it goes well with you, I may put the lifters back in my engine dry and see what happens.

I dont know how long it would take for those things to pump up though, so it may make a racket for the first few seconds or minutes.

AHHHH!!!! Brings back memories. Did that once with a friend after he finished working on his. Dead middle of winter, targa top, no doors, and raining. OH, and his tires stuck out like 5 inches past the fenders. I feel for ya man.
