i'm not sure how much you guys are gonna like this but i'm debating on trading my 99 gtp for an 85 Camaro w/ a 305. My question is has anyone on here ever done a carb to tpi swap on one of these? I've been doing a lot of research trying to find how to do this but can't find anything and all other forums are bits and pieces. from all the research I've done you guys are definently the best as far as knowing your stuff and I know you guys also know a lot about other cars so I thought i'd ask

I think even a stock gtp is quicker and more fun than a 305. well minus the fwd vs rwd

keep the carb setup. TPI sucks. headers, cam, heads from a TPI car, bigger carb and youll have a good amount of fun.
edit: didnt read, too lazy. sorry for the pointelss response.

I would do it if the Camaro had a 350, 305s are not the fastest around, but what do I know I have a grand prix....

Those 305's are dogs.....even with tpis. I think the carbed ones in 85 put out like maybe 170 something and the fuel injected ones got into 200 something....not nearly as fast as a gtp either way. If you're going to go third gen and it is your only car then you gotta buy one made up the way you want it. I went 350 and love every bit about it except I get 8 mpg right now.....so keep all that in mind.

Wait let me get this straight you are wanting to go from a 14 year old vehicle to a vehicle that is 28 years old. And it's your only means of transportation? Sounds like a terrible idea, especially since you are in college and probably need something remotely reliable. Why not save up and get a 2nd car. Or better yet just wait until you are out of college and find a decent paying job. It sucks for awhile, but you will thank yourself later. That's what I did and now I have 3 cars that are all fun as hell to drive and buying a fourth this fall.

Just like 87IROCZOWNER69 said. I was also looking for a third gen camaro for my first car and I can tell you from all the research and friends that drive them. They're nice to look at but unless you drop an ls1 or any other crate engine in their ****. The Carbed engines weren't reliable back then and don't even get me started on the CFI ones. The TPI's did pick up a little bit of the slack but even with the 305tpi you don't get near the hp of a GTP or MPG. It's almost not worth it unless you plan on LS1/T56 swapping.

Yup that's how you do it on those third gens....either get a nice all original one that you have for car shows or you LS swap one.

this i went from a dependable honda low miles yada yada but it wasnt cool enough...ended up with a bagged s10 with more problems then i care to mess with :nono:

on another note 305s kinda suck..best thing for more "power" change the gearing in the rear and usual bolt ons and itll be a fun ride! had a 305 in a full size truck but still had fun in it!

The 305 is to the 350 what the 3.1 is to the 3.8 basically. It was a stupid engine that GM put in cars to make them cheaper. 305s are crap engines and not worth ****, you can't even give them away. Trading a GTP for an 85 Camaro is the dumbest thing you could do. At least try and find someone with a LT1 looking to trade.

Only thing the 3rd gen has over the 4th gen is better looking exterior.
