When i start working my summer job next summer ('09) I'm thinking about buying a hd, I just want a black sportster 883 no saddle bags or tons of chrome. I was thinking about getting a crotch rocket but i dont want to kill myself and i like them now. I dont want to spend tomuch on one i know a brand new 08 sportster 883 is only 7k thts not bad but i only want to spend no more than 4k which i looked on craigslist and found a bunch of nice ones for 4k and under.

If you dont ride much or never have, its best to buy a cheaper bike. That way if god forbid you do wreck, you won't be out much money if it gets messed up.

I would suggest getting a 1200 sporty i have an 883 and it has no power. The 883 were still carbed until 07 i think. I would look into a 2004 or so 1200 that is when they switched the engine mounts to reduce vibration. The 883 is still a nice bike for cruising to work, but when you get two people on it it is a dog. When you decide to get a harley get some python III pipes or mufflers they sound the best imo. Then get a K&N filter and stage one jets for the carb or have the efi tuned. But i am getting a little ahead as long as it is a harley that is all that matters.

I am also looking at getting a bike next spring. I almost got a Kawasaki Ninja last summer but plans fell through on it. I would like to get a Kawasaki Vulcan. My dad has had 3, my grandpa has one, and my brother in law has one. I have been riding dirt bikes for 14 years.

One thing I don't like about Harleys is you pay alot for the name.

If you are looking at a sports bike look into a buell. They have lots of low end power and great handling. I am not much of a top end type of guy i like the low end torque. They are made by harley but are not too expensive you can get a great used firebolt xb12r for around $6000, but i also am a huge harley fan.

Why do you say that, i have read alot of reviews and i haven't found anything that mentions that they are unreliable but i'm not saying your wrong. Also since were talking about this how much is too many miles idk if its the same as a car if you take good care of it it can last a loooong time and have many many miles on it. I have seen some with 25k on them on criagslist but the average i see is 8k miles and i am looking at an older one nothing older than a 89, i probably should be thinking more like nothing older than 95 cause i guess my 4k max price will get me something a lil bit newer nothing in the 00's range but idk im still doing research.

I think an 883 is good enough to start off with for now. I dont think ill be getting anything that new i just want to spend no more than 4k really on it. But i defently will look into those pipes!! I heard about that how the older bike has alot more vibrations and the new ones they used rubber motor mounts or something like that but i dont care i dont really go on long long rides, this is gonna be my first motorcyle anyways soo if i like it and i really get into it ill think about getting a bigger and newer one in the future.

Yeah 20,000 miles is a lot for a bike. With most harley's tho the owner kept great care of the bike. They hold their value like no other. My friend owns a buell with i think 30,000 miles on it and it runs great. Go for the python pipes or screaming eagle i would recommend to stay away from the drag pipes. They have way way to high of a pitch and not enough back pressure.

Seeing you have never riden on the street, I would suggest a basic riders course. Most dealers have it and is only like 50-80 bucks. It will show you so much. When I went, there was a chick that had never been on a bike and in 2 days, she was riding like she'd been on one for years. If your only getting a HD for the name, check out the Honda VTX series. They are very nice and don't require the maint. as the HD. Just a suggestion, but I would really look into that class though.

I took the class. It looked like it helped the people who have not ridden on the street a lot. I had some experience ridding on the road and dirt bikes. I don't know what every one is saying about the maintenance. Yes there is some dealer recommended maintenance at different intervals, but nothing horrible. My bike has always been reliable, except when i fried the battery after letting it sit for the winter.

I say that becuase thats what you'll be doing. I never said they were unreliable. The motor is bolted directly to the frame. You'll be needing to tighten up bolts very often or stuff is going to start rattling and falling apart.

I can see now where you are coming from i have only dealt with new harleys with the rubber mounts. You just came off as another harley hatter at first to me, but know i see what you where saying. It would be interesting to see how big of a problem the vibrations are.

Idk i'm defently going to get a hd sportster 883 and my max $ will be no more than 4500 so that should get me one not to old and one with not to many miles. I dont mind the vibrations that probably wont be a big deal to me and as long as i dont have to turn a wrench every single time i drive im ok with doing that as well. Now i will have to take a drivers course when i get ready to buy a bike. Haha the cool thing about that is its right beside my mom's business and it only takes the weekend and ill have my license.

Same here. I'm not a HD hater, I've just dealt with alot of really older ones. Haven't messed around with any newer ones yet. By maint, I was refering to what Street was saying about haveing to go through and tighten up stuff every so often.

I am on the completely opposite side of the spectrum being that i have only dealt with the newer stuff. In the riding course try to get one of the endro's if they have them thats what i rode in mine. You feel at home coming from a dirt bike and they are fun to beat on.

I see the reasoning in starting out small, but I'm not your average girl. I am supposed to get a bike next summer. My husband got his in June. He got an 08 Heritage Soft Tail Classic. I picked out a Heritage Soft Tail Deluxe. I personally don't like a sportster. I think it should come with matching bra & panties Here is Troys new bike, then the one I picked out for myself. (Same colors. but my leather is all white)
    His
