If you have ever owned one or know someone with one what do you think of them? I have the opportunity to buy one. This will be my first bike so its not like it needs to be super fancy or top notch. Will this sufice?

This is not it but looks very similar to it.

still too much bike for your first bike.

you need something ****TY for your first bike for a couple reasons:
1 - you won't care about breaking it or dropping it.
2 - when you learn how to make an older carb'd bike run even if the carbs need a cleaning, a 'newer' bike will be a hundred times easier once you have the basics down.

I see. My other idea was a Honda Nighthawk from the 80s. The thing that I have been tossing around is that my buddy is selling this one and he always takes really good care of his stuff and keeps up with the maintenance. If I go and buy a cycle off Craigslist I have no idea what the past history of it is. Honestly if I didn't know he was selling his I would just get an older bike like the Nighthawk but not knowing the history of it really worries me.

Alright. I will try to dig up one of them. Just would rather not have to put a ton of money into one right away. Thanks for your input!

First motorcycle ever? My first bike was 03 GSXR 600, but I came off mx bikes. You have to learn the respect one way or another and if you have had prior 2 wheel exposure you might be better off spending at your 1k price range and grow into it. Buy a bike and deal with CL bs and then try to sell it and try to find another clean used bike? My friend had a starter 400 kawasaki, title license, insurance...road my bike and then had to deal with the process all over in about 1 weekend. Unless you are truly new to bikes I know what I would do.
If you dont have your license go to a local Tech College and take the weekend course. Cheap, you get experience on their bikes and typically saves on insurance with that cert.

That was a great bike in the day, couldn't really go wrong with a CBR, FZR, GSXR.

I have driven like 2 cycles before and have not had much experience other than that. Will be going in in a couple of weeks to get the temp license. Are you saying I can just take the course at the tech with no temps and that I will get my license if I pass?

that's basically it. if you take the riders safety course they give you a bike to learn on and they give you a waiver at the end of the class to straight up get your license without a test. that's how my wife got her M's.

What he said. That could be the best way to ensure you pass, most importantly, with the knowledge that could save your life. FZR is going to pull longer with more torque, I thought street bike was easier to hang to than the ole KX.
I most recently had a CRF 450X with a plate on it (purchased in MI, all but illegal in WI) That was like a 250lb pound FZR that could be ridden anywhere. Dunlop 606 on the back and you were golden on anything but an interstate.

riding a dual sport is tricky, you really have to know what you're doing. they ride like dirt bikes (wheelie monsters).
