2 weeks ago i bought a '91 cavalier for my dd. had to sell my other '96 corsica cause it was buring oil like crazy! i paid $600 for the cav with 81k miles. it's a 2.2 cylinder. i am really piss off cause i spend more money to fix it up than what paid for. from what i was told the car been parked for 2 years and it's very rusty on the bottom and engine bay. so far here's what i replaced: new alternator, battery, heater core and heater hoses, thermostat, front and rear brakes, front rotors, plugs, and pcv valve. new coolant, fuel filter, and tranny fluid are next on the list. what else should i be thinking of replacing soon? any other problems on the '91 2.2 cylinder that i should be aware of?

. i would never do that. this thing looks like a ghetto mobile. i just got new bumper from the junk yard last week. half of the bumper was missing when i bought it. the fuel line is all rusted out. i'm not going to touch that. going to take to the shop and have them make me new fuel line. the cav run fine as of right now. i love to get a honda, but since i already spent good chunk of $$$ on it already hopefully it will get me throught this winter without any issue.

This is typical for a northern 91 cav. Do a compression test, 2.2s where good for blowing head gaskets.

strangely parallel to your story i too owned a 96 corsica, and tried to replace it by buying a 91 cav....what a mistake that was, the cars like made out of recycled beer cans or something, after realizing my mistake i sold the cav for exactly what i bought it for and put the cash back into the corsica which then ran another year before my wife got rearended and the car was totalled out.... I'd suggest just dumping extra oil in the corsica, selling the cav and try to find an old honda opr toyota for your dd.... i currently got an 88 reg, and providing i can get the fuel pump switched out by next month, my GTP will enjoy a nice winter slumber in the garage

Ahhh yes I remember changes plenty of head gaskets on 2.2s when I worked at shops. Keep your eyes open for the front corners where the head mates to the block and make sure you dont see coolant leaking as this is a very common issue when the miles start climbing up, then it means taking off the head, having it surfaced, and throwing on a new gasket. These engines are cake to work on except for the retarded placement of the coil packs-on the lower back side of the engine. I dont know man, I think you should have your exhaust guy bend you up some 3" like the Monte has

The wife has an 01 cav. Base model 2.2 power nothing other than power steering. Her parents gave her the choice of the cav. or a base model neon as her new car right out of high school. Glad she made the better choice.

If it's been sitting for that long and if it's an automatic, most likly the trans lock up solenoid will not be working. There is a plug on the tranny for it. if you start driving it and come to a stop and it keeps stalling on you when you put it in gear you can unplug it and it should work, just won't have lockup. A great website for info on your car is v6z24.com
