Anyone who has to sit and in stop and go traffic every day already knows the answer. A manual is fun for a weekend play toy, but honestly an auto is easier for your day to day commute and shifts faster than you can when you get on it. No, you can't do a full proper shift in 0.1 seconds.

My concern with this project is power handling. How reliable will this transmission be behind a L67 with all this custom fabrication? This probably isn't something someone who has some decent mods should do.

i beg to differ about an automatic shifting faster. i have seen plenty of vids of 400+ hp cars not loseing an inch when they shift. and you know you gotta be pretty damn quick not to lose ground on a 400+hp car in full thorttle. also driving a manual in traffic is not that big of a deal. once you get used to it you can take off with out even have to give it gas. i could also save more gas with a manual. autos aint bad and once you learn to drive them good you can keep up with the manual guys. but being able to completly control your gears, work the clutch, hit some smoth gears and just being able to shift really make the whole car experence much better.

Me, personally? No I'd take a automatic any day. You can't out shift a built auto trans, but thats aside the point.


I just asked for the purpose of seeing why he had originally even bothered to take on the project.

true and its all in preference. and yea that was a big project to take on. im wondering how there going fix there axle problem

agreed. thats why i dont mind having an auto.

but for a play car that you dont drive every day it would be all kinds of fun to have a manual.

If you seriously believe someone can properly shift within 0.1 second (full double clutched and all) then keep right on believing that. It'll take longer than that to just pull the shifter to the next detent, not to mention the acts of engaging and disengaging the clutch.

who double clutches? seriously? i know a lot of people who dont even use the clutch so they can shift faster!

its really not that hard to drive a manual good if you arent a loser about it. besides, if your car is fast enough you dont even have to shift ultra fast.

When making a lot of power and shifting during WOT, synchros will wear out quickly and more stress is put on the trans when you don't double clutch. Everyday drivers probably not as necessary, but we're talking about performance machines here aren't we?

ive seen it in person. manual shifter does not take that long. i guess ill need to find a video to prove my point. but if you dont even lose a bumber when you shift manualy i think that is just as fast as an auto. not everybody can shift like that but then again lot of people can. just takes a little skill.

this is awsome i would love to have even a 5 speed... anythig manual in my grand prix..

but i would like to see some more pics/vids like the clutch the actual shifter and possibly if the axle gets fixed (which i would think cause i dont think you did that all for nothing) a video of you actually shifting cause really the rpm gauge doesnt look any different then my automatic. so very nice but show us more!!!

Are you serious? He shifts to 2nd at around 30MPH and to 3rd at around 60MPH.

My car shifts to 2nd at nearly 50MPH and to 3rd at nearly 90MPH.

first try i got .12

i know how quick it is but it can be done. hell when i had my manual, in truck also so its harder to shift, i could nail damn quick seconds. i would barly let off the gas and just pop the clutch real quick. press it down maybe an inch and slam the stick to the next gear as fast as possible. i could actually shift to 3rd faster than i could shift to second. kinda weird.

had the truck for 2 years, clutch never went out on me, i FINALLY broke a part on the shifter to hold it in place, not a sycriniser just a bolt to hold the shifter in place after 2 years of hard shifting.

ill have a good video soon to show a manual can shift just as fast as an auto.
you just have to be good at it.

REALLY good at it. autos are also way more consistent in the 1/4.

yea auto are way more consistent but ive also know people to win in bracket compitetions with manuals. like bio said. you just have to be REALLY good.

Whatever one really good man can do, a whole ton of machines can do better every time. It goes back to the point we were trying to make, that autos are faster and more consistent. Can a few really good professionals do it faster than some transmissions that probably aren't modded for it, sure. Can everyone? No.

A really built auto tranny in high performance car can shift faster than you can even decide to. The reason most autos seem slower at shifting is because they're programmed from the factory to provide a more comfortable ride. Ever ridden in a auto track car? It's one of the most harsh jolts you'll ever experience when it shifts at the top of a gear.

But back to the original point, manuals are fun for a weekend toy. But for daily drivers and the auto is more comfortable and faster when you really get on it.

I'm sure it's posted somewhere, but what transmission was used? I'd be interested in comparing the gear ratios and FDR of the new tranny to the 4T65E it replaced.

1 - 2.92
2 - 1.56
3 - 1.00
4 - 0.70
R - 2.38

FDR - 3.29 (for the GP GT, L36 Monte SS, and Impala 9C1)

That brings actual ratios (including the FDR) to the following:

1 - 9.607
2 - 5.132
3 - 3.29
4 - 1.316
R - 7.830

I decided to stick with the 3.29 FDR since we're talking about his car and he has a GP GT. You guys can alter the numbers for the 2.93 FDR found in L67 cars. Mine is different too since I have a 3.05 FDR.

and your pretty much right. im just saying you CAN keep up with an auto with a manual. ive done it many of times myself.

my brother has a shift kit in his mustang and yess it does jerk forward hard hitting second. BUT i could pop the clutch when i shift and get the same effect. no its not the most proper way but it can be done.

and really i think its personal preference. i have no problem driveing a manual everyday. i prefer it. like i said i can get better gas milage and i can better control my car.

all in personal preference.
