So i'm stuck here with my rents riding my a$$ over me tinting my tail lights, and it all boils down to this, is it legal or not?

I only plan on doing 2 LIGHT coats of VHT Night Shades i can buy at my local Canadian Tire, Home Hardware and Autoparts stores.

I'm asking (to those more specifically in Ontario, Canada) is, has anybody had any problems with legal isues such as fines or tickets?

    This.
AND obviously the darker you tint them the higher the chance of getting pulled.

it all depends on whether or not the state your in enforces the law or not. new jersey does not enforce it at all.

ive been stopped a few times since my tails were tinted, and they were never even asked about. mine are not all that dark, but definitively not the red stock they should be.

i have bigger issues with my front door windows being tinted, thats why i keep getting stopped.

says right on the can.. "off road use only"

    illegal boss..

however that being said, I've been driving before with tinted tails with a cop behind me, no problems. also seen plenty of cars around Ont with SUPER dark tails, cops keep on driving..

Its all a matter of how much of the law the cop wants to enforce today lol

It's not necessarily illegal, read your state laws.

Most states have a minimum distance your lights are required to be visible from.

Dude I live in Toronto. I have BLACK tail lights and cops follow me all day and they haven't pulled me over yet. As long as you don't have tint over your third brake light, you should be all good. These are mine with 3 coats light to medium so you can gauge your color. Also, if you're going to do it, be sure to take proper prep procedures: clean lights with soap and water, wet sand with 2000, etc. etc.

I would recommend taping off your reflectors though. Just cause at night when the car is off they will still reflect lol cops like to see that those are there

the only thing i would even consider masking off is the back up lights. not sure how it looks on the GP done like that, (haven't seen one yet) but the regal came out nice, and i can still see at night when backing up.

I would guess that the main problem would be is if you get rearended. Usualy it would be their fault, but if they say your tail lights are blacked out YOU could be found at fault. Just a thought.

No. Lets say you rearend someone with tinted tails.
You MIGHT have a case if it was dark and you were claiming you didn't see the car at all due to the lights, AND not seeing their reflectors, but you would be hard pressed still. If you didnt recognize the person was slowing, you were following too close.
Are you not at fault if you hit a child in the road because they didn't have lights? You are responsible for watching the road in front of you.
What if you are approaching a light/ stop sign whatever, and someone driving in a manual transmission car slows down without braking, or theyre stopped level and resting in neutral? Are you not at fault if you hit them?

The driver may be given a faulty equipment violation, but not found at fault.

I might be rambling at this point, I'll stop.

If your third brake light is not visible then yes, you may be liable to a certain extent or more likely to be so. If you can see the lights, I know for Ontario it's within' 150meters, then you're good. And if your third brake light is visible, then you should be good.

It's really not horrible. Plus it is an incentive if you're trying to get parents along with the idea. I had to do it because I live on a street with no lights and often have to park on the street and would much rather have my reflectors able to be seen by the psychotic drivers around here.
