I have a vacation coming eventually during the first week of August and im going to visit home up in NY. Im trying to decide which mode of transportation im going to take, I really want to take a plane since its the quickest by a longshot but...I have never been on a plane and im not gonna lie im nervous even though im a 21yr old dude.Call me p***y all yall want i have 2 fears only and thats heights and falling, yea.I have gotten over the fear of terrorists a long time ago I just want a smooth ride and dont wanna be on that plane and plummet 6 miles out the sky.So for those who have been on a plane before or even better those who ALWAYS take planes any advice or convincing you can give me? Otherwise i may just take a greyhound or rent a car and be done with it.

Planes are super safe. Just take the flight and get over your fear.

Safest form of transportation bar none. I build the damn things and still have jitters. Of course when we go up it's to do high speed stalls and such to flight test them and I'm still alive doing way more dangerous stuff in them than a normal commercial flight, so don't worry, you're safer flying than driving anyday.

take the plane man, if you can fall asleep its like a time machine, 2 hours later your landing on the worst runway in america.

i used to fly all the time its safe as can be, well safer then driving statistics wise.

Yeah man, I've taken quite a bit of plane rides in my life. There actually is greater chance of getting into a car accident than a plane crash. Something like every 5 seconds someone is gettin into a car crash. Plane crashes? sure they happen but most happen with private planes and those small little dinky planes. Passenger planes RARELY crash.
Once you get in the air, its kinda boring. bring books and music. the only exciting parts are takeoff and landing. but even those arent very eventful.
My brother and mom are the same way, if its really that big of a fear go to the doctor and he will give you some pills to knock you out for takeoff.
Good luck, and don't be scared, if I did it when I was 10, you can certainly do it now.

I wouldn't worry about a fear of heights. I personally don't feel the fear of heights in them because it feels like I am sealed from the outside. The fear of falling isn't there.

Ok i see.Yea i always hear the statistic of plane vs. car crash.Guess ill just go for it.I also hear to bring gum cuz of ear popping and whatever,I do have ear problems so i should probably bring gum. Oh whats the best are of the plane to sit like middle, front, back?

yeah..agreed. No fear of heights or falling (which I've had both) at all in a plane.

A plane is like this...take your fastest car and take off from a stop, now multiply that by 2-3 and that's take off. Imagine rolling over a bridge expansion joint then slowing for construction and that's landing. Now the time in between is a satelite view of the earth with beverage service, where you can see little things moving at times. (cars).

Beyond that.. they don't make you wear a shoulder belt..only a lap belt. Which we all know would piss off any law enforcement.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

to worst part of flying for me is landing due to ear pressure, and going deaf for a while after landing. but that is only if the plane drops fast for a landing. NY and FL both have airports where they can drop slowly, when landing like this my ears are fine, but like philly i think it was they dive bomb the landing and it kills my ears so bad. no gum helps on landing. only on take off, its like driving up a mountain, your ears just pop, its like nothing.

and the view flying into into NYC is incredible if your on the right side of the plane, (night flights are great for this) one side you see NJ the other is NY who wants to see jersey?? lol

JFK was just re paved, laguardia sucks, scary landing there, it feels like your landing in the water. Newark has a runway like a dirt road in africa, its in bad shape.

I agree with and add to what everone says:

    1. Its very safe. Amusement rides operated by carnies scare me, not jets.

    2. If you crash in a car, you'll probably survive while being badly crippled. If you crash in a jet you will probably just die.

    3. You have a stuartess, hopefully not a stuart.

    4. Perhaps the mile high club with your palm?

I've flown several times before and just last year flew by myself for the first time. My biggest issue was finding my way around Chicago O'hare. Other than that, it was grand.
You don't have anything to be scared of.

Lol. The show united stats of America just did An eposiode on fears.

    FYI:
You have a 1 in 10 million chance of dying on a plane
You have a 1 in 88 chance of dying in an automobile

most automotive accidents happen within 5 miles of your home too.

Safe stuff, I've flown literally a couple times around the globe with no issues at all, except the only time they lost my bags when I flew to NY. Enjoy the take off, the acceleration is nice during take off. I'm guessing that if you have a GP and are in these forums, you might like speed?

I have to disagree on this one, for a few reasons.

    1. Flying still gives me a horrible fear of falling.
    2. Sure there are more car accidents, but people in 999/1000 car accidents survive, plane crashes have probably the exact opposite survival rate.
2b. To add to that statistic, many more people drive than fly to of course there will be more car accidents.
    3. Don't need my alcoholic pilot neighbor flying my ass around, the fact that he is allowed to fly just is insane.
    4. I'd rather have a 12 hour drive that included good music, a few good places to eat and the fun of hauling ass down a freeway then being jammed between a 400lb smelly person and a screaming little kid again.

So in summary I will probably never fly again unless I am taking classes to get my pilots license.

I used to fly on average about 4 trips per month for work. This went on for about 5 years!

One time flying from Newark to Chicago we were supposed to avoid a storm but the pilot decided to fly out on the edge.
The storm direction shifted and we ended up right in the meat of it!

This was the scariest 3 or 4 minutes of my life.

The DC9 was like a paper airplane; wing-tips were bending up and down as if made of rubber.
It's hard to estimate how far the wings were bending but I'd say about 4 or 6 feet up and down in both directions.

Down-drafts were plummeting the plane so fast that anything not tied down would levitate, including people.
One time my butt was not on the seat for about 3 or 4 seconds!...seat belt pulling down on my hips.

Women and children were crying and I mean in tears. Flight attendants were white-faced.

Sometimes we exaggerate when we say "I thought I was going to die". Think about it.

While De-planing the Captain apologized to each and every passenger.

    Just sayin'
It's a CUMMINS Dodge not a Dodge Cummins

yeah i been on a few less than stellar flights, and yeah them wings do move a lot. i just keep telling myself i know if they didn't move they would break off.

if your tall request a emergency isle exit seat, you get more leg room, not much but more if you need it. its always seems colder and louder but worth it for the leg room. not as bad as the back of a plane thats the worst ride, best ride is first class, food and drinks the whole flight. good times.

I feel safe enough when I fly. It is a PITA though. It's uncomfortable, crap food, cramped, TSA can suck. I love driving long distances. But, if you're driving to NY and have to use 95 that's a PITA too. Highway is good up to Philly but going around Atlanta sucks. I try to miss the cities at rush hour but you can't always do it.
