Diamond Star Motors are known for their unreliability. You're going to have nothing but issues. I live in an area with a large car scene and everyone I see buy a DSM never finishes it, or it breaks and they never fix it.

    I wouldn't buy a DSM, ever.

    DSM is hit and miss...

    The eclipse = the Talon...

I've got a little 1996 Eclipse GS..(FWD, 420a motor)....its a stick, and a decent little car. Easy to work on too.

The 4g63 motors have a bad rap with crank-walk...but they do love boost.

IF you can get a good GSX or TSi AWD, and have a shop manual, I say go for it....

They weigh nothing, and with AWD, you can crack some damn fine 1/4 times.

BUT.....be prepared to have many headaches over **** (AWD, 4cyl setup, turbo, etc)

I'd but a Turbo DSM, but it'd have to be a super babied car.

I love the "ZOMGTEHCRANKWALKZ!!!!" people along with the "It's totally unreliable" crowd...

    really...

Used to have a 93 TSi AWD Automatic. It was a 4 bolt rear (desirable. all 91+ should have this) AND made after the mid-gen split. by this i mean all 93.5 & 94 cars were sort of a "1.5G" instead of just a 1G or 2G. They had 7 bolt motors (like a 2G) but with oil squirters like 1G cars and had several "1.5G" specific dimensions. Front covers were different, timing belt tensioner was different, and a few other odds and ends like head bolt dimension although physically both the head and block were of a 1G design principle along with the exhaust manifold and turbo setup.

The "1.5G" hybrid motors although 7 bolt by design DID NOT SUFFER FROM CRANKWALK (neither did the true 1G motors) and if your 2G motor is machined for the squirters and uses an updated bearing the chances of it happening to you are next to nothing. The only instances of CW i've seen come from 2G manuals with an EXTREMELY high pressure clutch setup.

Turbo size is 14b on the manual 1G and 13c on the automatic cars. 2G was a T25 IIRC - On the auto i only did downpipe/exhaust and a boost controller and dropped a full second off my 1/4 mile times. very easy to mod and go fast.

The reliability is only questioned by those that HEAVILY mod the car or fail to followup on proper maintenance. Timing belt needs done religiously with FRESH PARTS INCLUDING TENSIONER at 60k or sooner. ON THE DOT. NO LATER. i played Russian roulette with mine and lost. that's why my 93 ended up with a true 6 bolt motor. DOH!!

    This.

They are as unreiable as a 3800 is.

People that mod them without a care in the world or beat the living piss out of them are the ones breaking the cars...you can expect that with ANY platform, cmon now guys.

I for one would be for it...like stated they can be had for cheap...and go fast on the cheap.

I got my ass handed to me by a Dodge Colt recently...probably makes about the same power as I do...but over a thousand pounds less...love that little bucket.

if you want a fast little daily driver... DSM's are ftw as hell!

Everyone of my dsm buddies in town run pretty mild setups, and they all trap 120+mph on e85.

A 1G or 2G 5spd AWD with basic "level 1" mods will get you into the low 13's high 12's with a good driver and bite. With winter treads it will go anywhere in the snow.

It's a very capable platform. just don't neglect the basics. at all.

Few of my buddies have had them. All 2nd gen tsi's. All from very mild to crazy over the top everything done too it. Sad story of one kid had a 95 tsi that had 3000 original miles on the body and 600 miles on a crazy build. It was his dads show car and he owns archer racing here in Duluth. The kid beat the piss out of it then later sold it and got totaled the next day. Any way from what I have seen from these cars is the same as anyone says, good maintenance will help keep it reliable. If you do end up with a 7 bolt that crankwalks, rebuild a solid 6 bolt. My friend is in the middle of a build with an eclipse for a really nice set up but he is just trying to sell it now because he said he's sick of the head aches from dsm's lol I can give you a link to the build on his facebOok if you want

I would have bought a 2G DSM over my grand prix over and over again, if i would have had the choice. unless you are planning on keeping it stock, DO NOT look at anything that is not AWD and manual. Also, eclipses look 5x better than talons.

tuners are pretty cheap for the cars, get a turbo back, 16g, exhaust manifold, and a FMIC and you will be ballin.

    try DSMtuners.com

    Incorrect.

Nice to see the anti-DSM nutswingers are out in full force.

See above posts. Actual owner feedback/experience. They are as reliable as the owner is with regular maintenance.

just looked up some parts for it and they seemed alot cheaper then parts for the grand prix.

if i have to work on this car every weekend, i don't want one. but l agree a vehical can last long with proper care.

anyother fun cars to drive like the talon. (other than eclipse)
lets stay on the talon subject also but if anyother suggestions for fun cars then please add.
