I need one of those on my car to power my LEDs
Now if that could be put into a large scale production project? I could see it reaping benefits, and the build/cost factor would be so minimal these things would be stacked ontop of one another or use larger bands to recreate even greater "waves" or "virbations" for engery.
My hats off to him to come up with something like that. He will be winning some kind of award for something so simple yet so forward thinking!

I would like to see this technology take off as well. I mean, can you imagine that if you could generate enough current from them how useful that would be in something like a car when its going down the highway? To say nothing of how easy it would be to implement as a alternate energy source to wind turbines. You could stretch those things between power poles or something like that and not have to use land resources as you would with solar or wind turbines.
Ive said it before and I'll say it again, there is no one resource, renewable or not, that is going to replace our current resources. We are just going to have to buckle down and start building the infrastructure to use several alternatives, tailored to the region. Solar for areas like Arizona, Nevada, etc. Wind for the plains, and so on.
the other thing i wonder is how much wind does it need to generate a sufficient ammount of energy? that example he had there seemed to equate to hurricane force winds....
I dont think it would take that kind of wind speeds. I would think that the more flutter the higher the voltage/current output to a point, but I cant imagine that thing taking more than a few miles an hour wind speed to work.
He mentioned that the material is mylar, I think he said the same material that kites are made of. Mylar should stand up fairly well at the thickness it seemed that was. I guess the only weak point would be the ends where its clamped (think of bending a wire back and forth), but Im not sure. I would think he has thought that through. Additionally, you could have the mylar produced in such a way that its shape would make it easier to be fluttered or even build the housing in such a way to put the flowing air on to the strip in such a way it would start the flutter.
The principle of that thing seems simple enough that you could probably build one at home.
Okay, I just searched and its a mylar coated tafetta, whatever that is. I also thought that if they were to make the mylar or whatever it is thicker, it could be embedded with a steel mesh or cable or something for extra strength.
I found this doing some research on the device, kinda gives some more details and the power outputs and so forth.
