Those are some healthy looking Koi. Tell him to net his pond so the Blue Heron doesn't come and get them. It doesn't look the best, but keeps the leaves and other unwanted animals out. I'm in NJ also so they might find his fish. Think I remember they can smell them from a few miles away. Bastard, would stand on my roof and then swoop down to get them.

my brother lives in harriman NY hes got frogs that now live at the pond, and deer that come and drink from it lol and his dogs (labs) that like to jump in it as well, he's never had a problem with birds heating his fish, not yet, knock on wood.

he wound up selling the fry to the local fish store too when they got big enough to be worth anything, koi are funny the colors are hard to judge when they are small and when they grow it all changes, so hard to price out when 3 inches long, and all the dirt from the hole went towards the water fall, that air rates the water, and holds the filtration system.

sure is, my brothers pond, with the water fall sounds like a babbling brook as the water falls back to the pond, i think it took him a week to dig the hole deep enough and had to fight with all the rocks in the ground, but they went to good use in and around the pond, me i would have rented a bobcat with a back hoe attachment.

it pretty cool in the winter too, sometimes you can see a frozen fish in the ice lol

Ice locked will kill the fish the lake cabin we have is on a pretty shallow lake a few times the lakes literally frozen solid and killed everything. Then they just all wash up on shore until someone had the fvckin brainstorm to irrigate the lake like a massive fish tank so it doesnt freeze solid.

yes fish can freeze up and live, you can't put it in the freezer tho, back in school a teacher put gold fish in a tank and then into a freezer, and when thawed they were dead, the tank that was out side froze solid, and were alive come spring, it has to happen naturally, my brothers koi most of them are like 10 years old now, and they all survive winter year after year.

i cant tell you how many trout and carp i've seen frozen in body's of water.

then they swim under the ice, aka ice fishing time, fish are able to slow their metabolism down to nothing, like a heart beat a hour, and have some kind of antifreeze in their blood.

Yeah, mine never got to the point of completely frozen cause the water is 3-4 feet deep, but they would all go to the bottom and go into hibernation. Places that get colder would need to have the water deeper. Koi aren't a very hardy fish and can get sick easily even though it's supposed to be a hardy fish. If they survive though, they can live for many years. Shubunkin aren't as pretty, but can survive almost anything. I had them in the much smaller pond that was only 18 -24 inches deep. I'd recommend the Shubunkin for anyone not good with keeping things alive.
