Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
thats a good old cap and rotor. pop the cap off make sure the rotor is clean, and the cap is clean and not cracked. cap and new rotor are cheap, maybe 20 for both, its part of a tune up on those cars. if you do the plugs and wires, you do the cap and rotor.
and yup, tbi with a throttle cable. you can still clean it with carb cleaner, the flaps in there still get gummed up.
if you work the tb cable there with the engine off but set to run, you should see gas spray from the injectors in the intake. if you see that your getting gas.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
Blue cap the only piece of it I replace? Don't see how the rest comes apart. But the inside of that cap is corroded badly
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
theres a part in the middle under the cap, its got a metal tab on top from the middle to the edge, you pull it straight up, it comes off with a little tug. dont worry it can only fit back on one way.
if that cap is corroded change it, the end/side of the metal on the rotor may also look like its been beat with a hammer. if so its shot too. its what throws the spark to the cap. or it may be the fat round rotor that has 2 small screws that hold it down, just take the screws out and lift it off. once again, the new one can only go on one way.
like i said cap and rotor are part of a tune up for that engine. change em.

Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
That's the distributor fairly easy swap.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
That may have been why isn't wasn't running right as well. A couple of the teeth on it is chipped. Figured if I can get this thing running I'll be happy
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
If you have to change it it's just a 9/16 bolt and bickity bam it's out.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
theres a bolt on the side on top of the block with a clamp plate, take the bolt and plate off, mark where it was , note the rotor position. mark where its pointing, cause now it has to go back in the way it came out.
then you lift the whole thing out, as you lift it your'll see the rotor turn, when you drop it back in if you get the new one turned the same way it should drop right in. then its best to set the timing with a timing gun.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
any tricks when installling a new one? im gonna do just the cap and rotor thing for now and see if the truck will run with that and the cleaning and oil change. BTW that oil...was bad. hasn't been changed since before i joined the marine corps (and has only been driven less than 2k miles since then as well) and that has been 2.5 years

Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
I always set the timing by ear. It can be tricky getting it lined back up right. I had problems the first time i did it on my el camino.

that oil is dead change it. its got a shelf life. like i said, mark where the rotor points too, when you lift it, the rotor will turn, so when you drop the new rotor in match it up to how the old rotor is and then drop it in. it should set right back where it was, if its off by a inch, pull it back out, turn the rotor a little more then drop it in.
new cap and rotor may do the trick, if the electronic points set up are still good. looks pretty rusty under there.
do the cap and rotor, if it still dont have spark, change the distributor.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
Sounds good. Just ordered a cap/rotor. And oil is gonna drain over night now. I cleaned the TBI very thoroughly. And the fuel filter is replaced now.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
one more thing. how old is the gas in it? does it have a lot in the tank, or real low? bad gas will keep it from starting up. 2.5 years is a long time for gas to sit. you may want to take the gas filter back off and let the old gas pump out of the tank. then add some new gas.
if you do the throttle trick like i said before, you should be able to smell the gas in the tbi as it sprays out.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
not a bad idea. i did go and get 10 gallons of fuel in cans today. ill just pull the filter off and see if i can get all the old gas out. i havent put a battery in or even tried to turn it over yet.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
see if you can get a hose on the gas line then to a drain pan or bucket, or gas can. then turn the key to run, the fuel pump if its working will drain the tank for you.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
So easy. Thanks. I'm done with the truck for now. Got a good chunk done on it. Figured if I get it running drive it a week or so then change oil again
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
cant hurt. if its dark on the dip stick in a week i'd do it for sure.
Re: POST WHORINGZ THREADZ!11!!1!one
O I believe it will be!!!
