My buddy has a subaru legacy GT I thinks its a 99-00, the other day it ran out of gas and then something went wrong on it and he took it to the shop and they said he needs a new motor. I told him id give him 100 bucks for the car and he was all excited at the offer lol so my question is does anyone know any good motor swaps for it? its also an auto trans and I would probly want to convert to a 5 speed. Any input would be apreciated

all of the EJ motors (literally all of them) swap out for one another. you can put an STI motor in that car if you wanted to. the transmissions are also fairly easily swapped, but nothing you are asking about is even remotely cheap. a trans alone will cost you $3k or thereabouts. if you want an STI motor or trans, they are at least $5k each.

my advice? make the car run and use it as a winter beater. AWD is amazing in the snow.
