Well I need some opinions from you guys. I have a black 2dr 97 GTP with 140k miles and im beginning to think i want/need something else. Its in pretty good shape and very clean. I like the car but its starting to nickel and dime me (alternator 3 weeks ago and now my fuel line is shot, etc). I've keep up with maintenance and I try to replace things before they break. I love GM cars and Grand Prix's in general (Owned 3 in past the past 4 years) and I wont buy anything else but GM but i've almost had it with this one. I've got the title in hand and $2,500 left from taxes so....

Option 1: Trade in the 97 GTP and put the money down for a 04+ GTP with half the miles.

Option 2: Sell/Trade the GTP for a real nice 85-89 Iroc-Z and build a Vortec 5.7 to around 400hp (I LOVE those cars and how simple/cheap they are to work on). Then buy a DD/winter car for $1,500.

Option 3: Keep the GTP and do a 3.4 setup (If or whenever maintenance is finally done) .

Thanks for any HELPFUL or USEFUL opinions

All used cars require upkeep. You know what you have, that is better than getting something you don't know the history of.

I dont mind doing upkeep on a car, I just dont like doing it every other day. Id like to actually drive the car sometime.... I do get your point though. But if I got the Iroc I dont really need to know the history on it as long as it has minimal rust and a solid body becuase the motor, trans, and rear end, etc would all get replaced shortly after I bought the car anyways.

Sorry you said your current car is nickel and diming you and you want a third gen?

Those things are infamous for rot and everything is 20+ years old so everything will be failing for sure.

My buddy has one, owes on it, and its still rotting despite the good shape its in.

More fun than the GP to drive, but more expensive to own.

    I like option number one.

Try to price out Comp G's in your area.

Those seem to have everything us 97-03 guys wanted. (3.29's, ESC, larger sway bars, better struts, better seats and interior period etc.)

Yeah I had a 3rd gen around this time last year and it was a blast to drive but it was a DD so it killed me on gas and i sold it for the GTP. And if i got another one it would be a only be a weekend toy. But im leaning towards option 1 also. I found 2 silver comp g's for $8,500 at a few ford dealerships and i'll be giving them a call monday.

good luck gettin the vortec to hit 400hp. the spider injection on those suck ass. youre better off gettin a marine intake swap for those motors. other wise you will run lean no matter what you do. assuming youre buying a 96-99 vortec. if you use an old motor with vortec heads thats a different story.

It was just going to use vortec heads and block (I want to use a roller cam). Id ditch the fuel injection they came with for sure. I was thinking edelbrock air gap intake and holly 650 carb and either an LT4 or CC305 cam. 375-400 (crank hp) from that isnt to hard to do...

Well i've been searching for a decently priced comp g and i cant find one, and the ones i found have already been sold. So ive ruled out the Iroc idea and im kinda having trouble finding a comp g. What do you guys think about a cobalt SS/SC? or i'll just keep the GTP i have now and do a 3.4 setup next month.

    its a cobalt. they're small.

its a four. it'll sound worse than a 3800 (difficult concept i know)

its a cobalt. quality isn't high there either.

Five speed would be nice though.

Yeah id love to have a SS/TC but for the price im gonna have to pass. I could buy the SS/SC, mod it and still have money left over for less than the TC.
