I took my car in to get tires rotated today and they just called me saying that when they were rotating them they found a big safety issue that my left tierod is almost broke off and my right one is about to come off also. He said I probably woulnd't make it very far at all so I said I guess I'd have to get that done. He said it would cost about $220 with parts and labor is that sound right? I was doing some searching and I am seeing tie rods going for around $40 or is there more parts they are going to be needing to do? Either way if I am getting ripped off or not I noticed the car was pretty shaky squeeking on the way there I just thought brakes were getting bad . Good thing he found it though I am going on a 12 hour drive trip today haha.

tie rod ends range between 19.99 (cheap) to 69.99 (Moog)...then you have to factor in the Alignment, and then labor to put them on.....

if it were around 180.00...the price would be good..... he must have a high labor rate...

Not a bad price. I would say for a medium grade tie rod end you are lookin at $40-50. And probably takes an hour to install. So while the price is a couple bucks high, I don't think you are getting ripped off.

Just make sure that price includes an alignment. If it does, I would say go for it.

make sure you see it before they do the work, that is a common ploy for unscrupulous mechanics to use. Price isn't too bad, around here you'd spend about $70 each on tie rods (shop mark up) plus $150 or so for labor
