I've been out of that scene for a while, but if I remember correctly, If you look at pre-2005, get a fan-cooled. I remember nothing but problems with liquid cooled sleds. Mainly caused by warm days. Most brands had overheating problems. If you looking for a 600cc+ you probably won't have a choice though.

If this is going to be your first snowmobile, get a 500 or less. They're just as easy to kill yourself on as any other sled. They usually just don't go over 110 mph, which is definitely a good thing for an inexperienced rider.

My parents had Ski-doo 500's while I was growing up but they were slow as hell. I suspect my dad tweaked them so they wouldn't be so fast. I probably would be dead now if they weren't. One of my friends got a mid 90's Polaris 500 fan when I was in high school. If you nailed it, it would lift the ski's a foot off the ground without even leaning back. It topped out at about 100. It's only downfall was that it handled like a dragster. The turn radius was hilarious.

Get a liquid cooled. You will blow up a fan cooled trying to ride with anyone with a bigger sled. I would get a 500-600 to start with. Try to find a 2000ish mxz 5/600 liquid cooled. Or if you got money to spend get a 2010 articat snowpro 500.

Remember always where a helmet. It saved my life once, I would hate to see ya get killed for just being ignorant and not wearing a helmet.

Make sure the track still has some paddle left. Most should be at least an 1" tall, engine wise I am not too up to date on them. If you get a 2 stroke make sure to run good oil in them.
