On the speedo cluster, to the left when you get enough light you can see perf shft or something like that. Why is tht their ?? Does it turn on when its not working or what?

You might have a "Performance Shift" button on the side of your shifter. It's supposed to change your shift points (and IIRC line pressure). The light should come on when performance shift is enabled.

I don't remember what year they got rid of the performance shift button, but if your car doesn't have it then the light is just left over.

I believe it was 2001 they got rid of the Performance Shift. If you see it on the dash I would imagine you have it because all the newer models (I assume 2001 and newer) have the performance shift indication on the D.I.C. screen.

Oh i kno that i have the performance shift, it comes with all gtp's up too 01 i believe. Well if that light comes on when you press it, then it doesnt work, but i dont know why they would need to put it on the speedo cluster their when it allready has it on the drivers information center.

My guess would be that GM wasn't sure if they were going to provide all cars with the DIC or not. Or if it was going to work or not. But they wanted to have the PS option available. And so they went out for bids and had the gauge clusters made before the final design of the interior was complete, including the DIC. So when it was decided that the DIC was going to be a standard option, there was no need for the PS light in the gauge cluster. But they were already being made with them in there. So they left it as is....no big deal.

Again, this is just my guess of what could have happened.

The 2000 model was the last year for Performance Shift, however it was not removed from the "electronics" because it would have cost more to re-tool, so the option is there its just not hooked up.

IIRC, some of the earlier model years that had performance shift and did not have the DIC, had a light that lite up on the dash, however if you have a DIC in the car that light wont light.

I have a 2001 and added performance shift, and the DIC does light up "Performance Shift".

I have also edited my PCM, so that when in Performance Shift, I get firmer shifts (upped the pressure in the trans), Higher RPM's before shifting (Almost to the redline before it shifts in WOT) and skip shift below 40 mph (when below 40 MPH, and you go WOT, it will shift from 3rd to 2nd to 1st in less than 1/2 a second.

if you put a bulb in there, it will indeed light up blue to indicate performance shift... (provided you do have performance shift... the circuit should be active, just has no bulb in it) as to why the duplication, Zef's probaly not far off.

97 and 98's are the only ones that had the 'Perf Shift' light up on the instrument panel.

I can't speak for 98s, but neither of my 97 had this light ever come on in the dash. My first 97 was produced in Nov. 96, and my current car was produced in Feb 97.

Again, I have never had this light up in any of my cars, nor have I ever seen it light up in any GTP I have been in.

it's not lighting up because there isnt a bulb there. if you put a bulb there, it should light up.

i've only read of one or two people over on the other board that had the light come on without specifically putting the bulb in it.

I understand this. But I was replying in response to StreetWolf's post about the lights only being on in the 97s and 98s. While the spot is there, and it may just need a bulb, most of the ones from the factory did not have the light come on. I was just clarifying his post....that the spot is there, it just doesn't light up.

ok, I read this post and had to try, so I took out the light for the damn seatbelt indicator(i always wear it I dont need this light) and put the bulb and socket in the PERF SHIFT spot, this is marked as "spare" on the printed circuit material.

When I turn on my perf shift, the light doesn't light up.... My car is a 2002, but this could be a prob with my car cause it doesnt show perf shift in the DIC either.....
And I know it is on because my skip shifts work

When hooking up the perfect shift you will also need to run the wire out to the PCM so it can work...
    I have a 1998 GTP Perfect shift..
but it is not hooked up needs a wire run to the #21 pin of the PCM
in order for this to work...

I have a wire to the pcm, and I can tell that it switches, but the lights dont activate, I don't want to thread jack though, this is just for information

It lights up on 1998 model GTPs only IIRC. All the other year GTPs didn't get a blub there. My Perf Shift light works on my cluster works, I added the blub like mentioned above. I had a spare cluster so I took a blub out of it and popped it on my cluster, it works. Its a blue color, same as the high beam indicator.

everyone sems to have this almost nailed, but Shawn has it down perfectly. for whatever reason it is, GM put the perf. shift indicator in the DIC in 97, then switched to the Instrument cluster in 98 and back to the DIC for all other years. however, GM being the way they are, if you have a GT with the digital DIC, you'll also have the perf shift in the DIC, just not able to be hooked up, since they are the same part number for dig. DIC in GTs and GTPs. I bet that the Instrument panel is the same for all GPs also, I know it was on my 97 and my 98, as well as all of my friends' GPs too. hope that helps.
